Bharat Sevashram Sangh Distributes Free Textbooks to Students in Remote Sundarbans, Promotes Rural Development

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, January 3, 2025, Kolkata :  In a significant initiative for educational and rural development, Bharat Sevashram Sangh, under the leadership of Swami Vishwatmananda Maharaj, distributed free textbooks and study materials to students up to class IV in the remote and backward areas of the Sundarbans. The books were provided to students from around 42 schools as part of an effort to support education in some of the region’s most underserved communities. The event, which took place on New Year’s Day, was organized by the Kolkata Baliganj branch of Bharat Sevashram Sangh.

Swami Vishwatmananda Maharaj, the Chief Secretary of Bharat Sevashram Sangh, addressed the gathering and emphasized the organization’s commitment to not just education but also the holistic development of rural economies. “Along with education, we are working on various initiatives for the development of the rural economy, including scientific advancements in animal husbandry and other key areas,” he said.

The distribution of free textbooks was part of a broader effort by Bharat Sevashram Sangh to uplift communities in the Sundarbans, specifically in areas such as Gangasagar, Basanti, Gosaba, Kulpi, Mandir Bazar, and Kultali’s Maipeeth. Teachers and school officials from the participating institutions were also present at the event, highlighting the local support for the initiative.

In addition to educational support, the Sangh has been working on training students and local residents in sustainable agricultural practices, including fish farming, and providing free medical services to those in need. This comprehensive approach aims to make these communities self-reliant and resilient in the face of economic challenges.

Swami Vishwatmananda Maharaj also referenced ancient spiritual teachings to underline the importance of knowledge, both material and spiritual, in leading a fulfilling life. He quoted the Amritabindu Upanishad and the Kath Upanishad, drawing attention to the transformative power of the mind. “Mind is the cause of bondage and liberation. A mind attached to objects is the cause of bondage, and a mind unattached to objects is the cause of liberation,” he said, emphasizing the role of education and spiritual awareness in overcoming life’s challenges.

The event was further supported by the voluntary organization Joy Foundation, with Utpal Dhar representing the group. The Sangh’s efforts in the region reflect their long-standing commitment to community development through education, health services, and economic empowerment.

As the year begins, these initiatives demonstrate a hopeful vision for the future of students and families in the Sundarbans, who will benefit from continued educational support and sustainable development programs.
