Moreover, a new luxury three-storey house named ‘Ghosh Villa’ has been uncovered in the Noapara Mallik Bagan Hatiara area of Kolkata’s New Town. This house is where Sandeep Ghosh’s parents lived. The caretaker of the Beleghata flat told reporters that Sandeep Ghosh bought the car a few months ago and would occasionally use it, parking it in the garage.

Curiously, while the nameplates of luxury flats in Canning bear clear identification, the nameplates for the two flats in Beleghata do not display any names. This has led to speculation that Sandeep Ghosh may have deliberately omitted his name to conceal his ownership.

ED raids houses of ex-principal of RG Kar hospital, aides over financial irregularities

MP, 6 September 2024, Kolkata: Enforcement Directorate (ED) officers on Friday conducted simultaneous search operations at the residences of Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, and three of his associates in connection with alleged financial irregularities at the institute, an officer said. 

The raids were carried out at Ghosh’s residence in Beliaghata and at two locations in Howrah and Subhasgram. 
All the four are already in CBI custody. “We reached these places around 6.15 am and started our raids,” the officer said. 
The ED has filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) against Ghosh, which is analogous to a First Information Report (FIR) in criminal cases. 
On August 23, the Calcutta High Court ordered the transfer of the investigation into the alleged financial irregularities at state-run hospital from a state-constituted Special Investigation Team (SIT) to the CBI.
This decision followed a petition by Dr. Akhtar Ali, the former deputy superintendent of the facility, who sought an investigation by the ED into multiple allegations of financial misconduct during Ghosh’s tenure as principal.
Ghosh served as principal from February 2021 to September 2023. He was briefly transferred from RG Kar in October 2023 but was reinstated within a month. Dr. Ali had raised concerns that the corruption at RG Kar hospital might be linked to the doctor’s death, suggesting that the victim was aware of the misconduct and might have threatened to expose it.

The incident unfolded on Thursday afternoon near the Teesta River in Balapara, a locality close to Jalpaiguri city. During the interrogation by locals, one of the young men, later identified as Kishore Roy, claimed to be a civic volunteer. A search of the duo led to the recovery of one and a half grams of brown sugar (a form of heroin) and 93 intoxicating tablets. The other arrested individual, Sameer Mandal, is a resident of the King Saheb Ghat area of Jalpaiguri town. The police are investigating if there is a larger network involved or if they were merely consumers of narcotics. Both have been charged under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for illegal possession of narcotics.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of police officers from NJP police station conducted a raid in the area adjacent to NJP Netaji More on Friday. The police arrested Geeta Shaivya on the spot and seized the illegal consignment. According to police sources, she has been involved in the illicit trade of raw spirit for quite some time and has been on their radar.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the raw spirit seized from her possession is often used in the production of fake liquor. Such illicitly made alcohol poses serious health risks to consumers and has been linked to numerous cases of poisoning and fatalities. “The sale of raw spirit is illegal, and its use to make counterfeit liquor is a major concern. We are committed to cracking down on this illegal trade,” said a senior police official from NJP police station.

PTI, New Delhi, 12.08.24 : The Delhi High Court on Monday granted interim protection from arrest till August 21 to former IAS probationer Puja Khedkar, who has been accused of cheating and wrongly availing OBC and disability quota benefits.

Justice Subramonium Prasad issued notice to the Delhi Police as well as the UPSC on the anticipatory bail plea by Khedkar, and asked them to file their responses.

“In the facts of the present case, the court is of the opinion that the petitioner be not arrested till the next date of hearing,” Justice Prasad said.

The court listed the case for further hearing on August 21.

Khedkar allegedly misrepresented information in her application for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, 2022 to get reservation benefits.

On July 31, the UPSC cancelled Khedkar’s candidature and debarred her from future exams.

On August 1, a sessions court here had denied anticipatory bail to her and said there are serious allegations against her, which “require a thorough investigation”.

Khedkar had approached the sessions court, saying she faces “immediate threat of arrest”.

IJU Condemns Police Brutality Against Journalists in Manipur and Delhi

Similarly, on 30 July, Poonam Pandey, assistant editor of the Hindi daily Navbharat Times, was detained by police while covering a Mahila Congress demonstration near Kartavya Path in Delhi. The IJU has demanded immediate action against the police officers involved in both cases.

In Delhi, Poonam Pandey reported that police obstructed her from filming the protest by covering her camera with a black cloth and attempting to seize her phone. Despite identifying herself as a journalist and showing her press ID, she was detained and placed on a bus with the protesters. Pandey also noted the absence of female police officers during the incident, although female CRPF personnel were involved in taking her phone and detaining her.

In Manipur, Mutum Rameshchandra recounted being punched and kicked by a sub-inspector, resulting in injuries to his right chin. His phone was destroyed, and he was struck with a service weapon. The All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU), affiliated with the IJU, along with the Editors Guild of Manipur, organized a protest march from the Manipur Press Club to Chief Minister Biren Singh’s residence, demanding an impartial inquiry and appropriate action against the offending police officer.

IJU President and former Press Council of India member, Sabina Inderjit, alongside IJU Secretary General and IFJ Vice President, condemned these incidents. Inderjit emphasized that attacks on journalists are becoming increasingly common and represent a direct threat to press freedom. She stated that targeting journalists indicates a deliberate attempt by governments to suppress the free flow of information, urging the media community to unite against these violations of the fourth pillar of democracy.
