Need to develop earthquake warning systems: PM Modi

PTI, NEW DELHI, JAN 14, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday urged scientists to develop warning systems for earthquakes while noting that advanced weather forecasts have significantly reduced casualties and minimized economic losses caused by cyclones. Addressing a function to celebrate 150 years of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Modi also lauded the institution as a symbol of India’s scientific journey.

The Prime Minister noted how advanced weather forecasting has significantly reduced casualties during cyclones and minimized economic losses, boosting investor confidence and building economic resilience. The Prime Minister also launched ‘Mission Mausam’ for developing cutting-edge weather surveillance technologies and systems, implementing high-resolution atmospheric observations, next-generation radars and satellites, and high-performance computers. “We have launched ‘Mission Mausam’ to make India weather-ready and climate-smart,” Modi said.

The celebrations were attended by World Meteorological Organisation Secretary-General Celeste Saulo, Earth Sciences Minister Jitendra Singh, Earth Sciences Secretary M. Ravichandran, IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, and a host of dignitaries. Modi also released the IMD’s Vision-2047 document for weather resilience and climate change adaptation, a commemorative postage stamp, and a coin to mark 150 years of the IMD.

“Meteorology offers the most important support for the disaster management capability of any country. To minimize the impact of natural disasters, we need to maximize the efficiency of meteorology,” the Prime Minister said. He recalled how the cyclone in Gujarat’s Kandla in 1998 and the 1999 Odisha supercyclone killed thousands. “But loss of life is minimal now because of better forecasts,” he said.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Pushes for National Recognition of Gangasagar Mela Amidst Discontent Over Central Government Support

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,

Kolkata, January 14, 2025 : A growing contention has emerged between the Gangasagar Mela in West Bengal and the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh over national recognition and government funding. This ongoing dispute intensified as West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday once again pressed for the Gangasagar Mela to be recognized as a national fair, pointing out the stark contrast in the central government’s treatment of both events.

Chief Minister Banerjee, who recently inspected the preparations for Gangasagar Mela, emphasized that over one crore pilgrims attend the event every year, yet the central government has not allocated the same financial support as it has for the Kumbh Mela, which receives funding running into thousands of crores. She has repeatedly demanded that the Centre recognize Gangasagar Mela as a national event, but according to her, these pleas have fallen on deaf ears.

Banerjee highlighted the difficulty of accessing Gangasagar Island for the Mela, contrasting it with the multiple routes available for pilgrims attending the Kumbh Mela. She criticized the Centre for not fulfilling its promise to build a bridge connecting Sagar Island to the mainland, a project that she says would ease the burden on pilgrims. Despite waiting for years, Banerjee noted that no progress had been made by the central government, and as a result, her administration has decided to proceed with the construction of the bridge on its own. She indicated that the project, estimated to cost around Rs 1,500 crore, would take three to four years to complete and emphasized that a rushed approach could jeopardize the structure’s safety.

In addition to the bridge issue, the Chief Minister revealed that her government has been actively improving the infrastructure surrounding the Gangasagar Mela, including the construction of a helipad and other essential facilities. She also suggested a solution to address the ongoing coastal erosion near the Kapil Muni Ashram, urging the senior priest of the ashram to allocate part of the funds they receive to build a protective concrete structure to prevent the sea from advancing further towards the temple.

Banerjee also shared plans for further administrative improvements in the region, including the creation of separate sub-divisions for areas like Gosaba, Patharpratima, Sandeshkhali, and Hingalganj. These areas, surrounded by water, face unique challenges, and the Chief Minister believes that these administrative changes will help residents access government services more efficiently.

The controversy surrounding the Gangasagar Mela and its lack of recognition continues to highlight the tensions between the state and central governments, with Mamata Banerjee urging the Centre to address the inequities and fulfill its promises to West Bengal.

Shiv Sena’s Decision to Contest Alone Stirs Speculation About MVA Alliance Stability

KalimNews, January 12, 2025, New Delhi : In a move that has sent ripples through Maharashtra’s political landscape, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction) announced its decision to contest bypolls independently, despite being a key partner in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. Sanjay Raut, a senior Shiv Sena leader, made the announcement, emphasizing that the decision was taken with the full consent of party chief Uddhav Thackeray.

“We will fight alone, whatever happens. We need to focus on our own strength,” Raut stated, while confirming discussions with the party’s Nagpur branch chief, Pramod Manmore, about contesting independently in the crucial Mumbai and Pune bypolls.

This declaration has sparked speculation about the future of the MVA alliance, which comprises the Shiv Sena (UBT), Sharad Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and the Congress. Although the Shiv Sena has contested local and municipal elections solo in the past, this renewed assertion of independence comes at a time when the alliance’s cohesion is under strain.

Adding to the uncertainty, the NCP, another key MVA ally, has raised eyebrows with a series of favorable remarks about the BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), alongside signs of alignment with the BJP-led government in Maharashtra. Observers note that these developments have left the Congress increasingly isolated in the state and at the national level.

The timing of Shiv Sena’s announcement, amidst its participation in the India Manch platform of opposition parties, has further fueled political intrigue. On the national stage, Sanjay Raut has consistently voiced support for opposition unity in the tone of RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, yet the decision to contest solo at the local level highlights a potential disconnect.

Political analysts suggest that the Shiv Sena’s move could be a strategic attempt to consolidate its base in urban centers like Mumbai and Pune, which hold significant electoral importance. However, it raises questions about the long-term viability of the MVA alliance, particularly as individual partners appear to be prioritizing their interests over collective goals.

As the bypolls approach, the political dynamics in Maharashtra are poised for significant shifts, with the Shiv Sena’s independent stance signaling potential realignments in the state’s power structure.

Prime Minister Modi Clarifies Past ‘Non-Biological’ Remark, Sparks Renewed Controversy

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, January 11, 2025, Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s remarks from a past speech have once again ignited a heated debate, following his recent appearance on a podcast hosted by Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of Zerodha. The podcast, which featured the Prime Minister as a guest, offered glimpses of his reflections, including an acknowledgment of a controversial statement he made during his tenure as Chief Minister.

In the podcast, Modi addressed the earlier comment, stating, “I am also an ordinary person. I am not a god.” He further added, “I made an inappropriate comment in a speech while I was the Chief Minister. But I make mistakes too. I am also human.” The precise context of his clarification remains unclear, but it appears to reference a remark made before the Lok Sabha elections, where Modi had declared, “When my mother was alive, I thought that I was born through a biological process. But after my mother’s death, I have become convinced from various experiences that the Supreme Spirit has sent me. I have not received this much strength from any biological process. God wants me to work, that is why He has given me this strength. He has also given me the ability, the goodwill, and the inspiration.” At the time, this statement sparked widespread criticism and was interpreted by many as a self-comparison to a divine incarnation.

The recent clarification, however, has not quelled the controversy. Opposition parties, including the Congress, have continued to mock the Prime Minister, referring to him as a “non-biological” Prime Minister. This renewed backlash highlights the enduring impact of the original statement, as well as the polarized political discourse surrounding Modi’s leadership.

Mamata Banerjee Slams Odisha Government Over Tiger Zeenat’s Relocation to Bengal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,  January 8, 2025, Kolkata :

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her displeasure on Monday over the ongoing tiger relocation issues, specifically the case of Zeenat, a three-year-old tigress that had wandered through three states, covering 300 kilometers, before entering West Bengal from Odisha. The tigress, who had escaped from Odisha’s Similipal Tiger Reserve (STR) on December 8, was sedated and captured in a forest near Gosaindihi village in Bankura district on December 29 after causing significant disruptions across West Bengal.

Zeenat’s journey through Odisha, Jharkhand, and finally into West Bengal caused considerable distress to local communities. According to Banerjee, the Bengal Forest Department’s efforts to safely capture and repatriate the tigress to its original habitat were exemplary. “The way we handled the situation, without causing any harm to the tigress, is a model for tiger management,” Banerjee stated. She criticized the Odisha government for not acknowledging Bengal’s humane approach to the crisis, while also accusing them of failing to protect their own wildlife.

The Chief Minister particularly expressed frustration over the disruption caused by Zeenat’s entry into Bengal. “Five districts of West Bengal were practically locked down at that time. People could not leave their homes, and schools had to be closed. We endured the ordeal, and later, they asked us to return the tiger,” she remarked, highlighting the challenges faced by local authorities and residents.

Zeenat, who had been relocated to Similipal Tiger Reserve of Odisha from Maharashtra’s Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserve in November 2024 to help strengthen the gene pool of the reserve, managed to escape on December 8. Her journey through Jharkhand and West Bengal, where she was sighted and eventually captured, has raised concerns over the handling of tiger relocation and the safety of residents in the affected areas.

Banerjee, in her address, also called on the Odisha government to take more responsibility, urging them to send rescue teams to ensure such incidents do not recur. “The life of people in Bengal has been disrupted again due to this big cat entering the state. The Odisha government, unable to protect its wildlife like tigers, should take a proactive role in preventing such situations,” she said.

The Chief Minister’s comments underscore the ongoing tension between neighboring states regarding wildlife management and tiger conservation. While Bengal has implemented strategies to safeguard both the animals and public safety, Banerjee’s remarks reflect her frustration with the lack of coordination from Odisha’s forest authorities in managing the movement of wildlife across state borders.

As Bengal continues to work towards the safety of its residents, the government has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting both wildlife and human life, stating that no further disturbances will be tolerated. “We love wild animals, but human life must also be safeguarded,” Banerjee concluded.

Modi Government to Build Memorial for Former President Pranab Mukherjee at Rajghat

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,  Delhi, January 8, 2025 : The Narendra Modi-led government has announced plans to construct a memorial for the late President Pranab Mukherjee at the heart of New Delhi. The Union Ministry of Urban Development has earmarked land at Rajghat, the iconic national memorial area, as the site for the tribute.

Sharmistha Mukherjee, the daughter of the late President and a former Congress spokesperson, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to express her gratitude after receiving official communication from the government regarding the memorial’s establishment.

Despite having ideological differences with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Pranab Mukherjee maintained cordial personal relationships with several BJP leaders throughout his political career. Notably, he shared a close bond with Atal Bihari Vajpayee, with whom he was neighbors and often went for morning walks. Pranab also had a longstanding relationship with Narendra Modi, which began well before the latter assumed the role of Prime Minister. The two leaders shared a mutual respect, with Modi even seeking Pranab’s guidance shortly after his election.

In an early interaction following Modi’s swearing-in as Prime Minister, the two engaged in a long conversation at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. During the meeting, Modi assured Pranab that if any issues arose, he would be available at any time to offer assistance. This camaraderie between the two political figures did not sit well with some members of the Congress party. Furthermore, the relationship faced additional scrutiny following Pranab’s speech at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, which was criticized by his daughter Sharmistha, though Pranab did not take the criticism to heart. He believed in maintaining open channels of dialogue, even with those who held differing ideological stances.

Pranab Mukherjee’s contributions to the nation were further recognized when he was awarded the Bharat Ratna by the Modi government. The decision to allocate land for his memorial reflects the government’s acknowledgment of his legacy and his role in shaping India’s political landscape.

The memorial, once completed, will serve as a lasting tribute to one of India’s most respected political figures, marking a moment of reconciliation and mutual respect between differing political ideologies.

Bangladesh Supreme Court Bans 50 Judges from Coming to India for Training

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Delhi, January 7, 2025: In a significant development, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh has issued a ban on the planned visit of 50 Bangladeshi judges to India for judicial training. This move follows a recent decision by the country’s Law Ministry, which had initially approved the participation of these judges in a training program at the National Judicial Academy and State Judicial Academy in Bhopal, India. The decision was announced in a notification signed by Dr. Abul Hasanat, Deputy Secretary of the Law and Justice Department, on Sunday.

According to reports, the judges affected by this ban included Assistant Judges, Senior Assistant Judges, Joint District and Sessions Judges, Additional District and Sessions Judges, and District and Sessions Judges, along with officers of equivalent rank. These judicial officers were scheduled to attend the training from February 10 to 20, 2025. However, the Supreme Court’s intervention has led to the abrupt cancellation of the trip, disrupting the plans for the training program.

The training program in India was designed to offer advanced judicial training and capacity-building opportunities for the participants. The initial approval by the Law Ministry had been part of an ongoing effort to enhance the professional skills of lower-court judges in Bangladesh.

While the official reasons for the cancellation remain unclear, diplomatic circles suggest that the move may be linked to broader political considerations. Speculation is rife that the pro-Pakistan BNP leadership, which is reportedly exerting influence over the country’s judicial system, may have played a role in halting the judges’ trip. The cancellation of the training program follows an earlier controversy involving the incarceration of Chinmoy Maharaj, a prominent figure in Bangladesh, who has been jailed without trial.

The abrupt decision has raised concerns within diplomatic and legal circles, with some questioning the independence of the judiciary and the influence of political forces in Bangladesh’s legal system.

While the official cancellation came at the last minute, it is expected to have far-reaching implications, particularly in terms of judicial cooperation between India and Bangladesh, which had been strengthening in recent years.

7.1-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Nepal and Tibet, Tremors Felt Across Northern India Including Patna, Katihar, Siliguri, Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Sikkim, Delhi NCR

Agencies and KalimNews, January 7, 2025, Kolkata: A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal in the early hours of Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at 1:05 AM UTC (6:35 AM local time), sending shockwaves across the region. The epicenter of the quake was located 93 kilometers northeast of Lobuche, near the Himalayan region, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The tremors were also felt in several parts of northern India, including Darjeeling, Siliguri (6.37 AM), Jalpaiguri (6.35 AM), Coochbehar, Katihar, Patna, and the Delhi-NCR region at around 6:35 AM local time (6.3. Residents in these areas reported shaking, but there have been no immediate reports of significant damage or casualties. The earthquake was also felt across parts of West Bengal and northeastern states, including Assam.

The earthquake lasted for approximately 15 seconds, and authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, as aftershocks are likely. Additionally, two aftershocks of magnitudes 4.7 and 4.9 were recorded from the same area in Tibet, near the Nepal-Tibet border. These aftershocks followed the initial tremor and heightened concerns of potential damage.

According to data from the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the first aftershock occurred at 7:02 AM IST, registering a magnitude of 4.7. Its epicenter was located at latitude 28.60° North and longitude 87.68° East, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Just five minutes later, another tremor of magnitude 4.9 was recorded at 7:07 AM IST, with its epicenter at latitude 28.68° North and longitude 87.54° East, at a depth of 30 kilometers.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the quake also affected Tibet’s Xizang region, where it struck at 6:35 AM local time. The region, known for its seismically active nature, was shaken by the powerful quake, though no significant damage or casualties have been reported as of now.

In Nepal, the tremor caused residents in the capital, Kathmandu, to rush out of their homes in panic. Streets were filled with people who were awakened by the shaking. The 7.1 magnitude quake, while strong, did not result in any reported fatalities or structural damage in Nepal so far, according to local authorities. This comes as a relief to many, especially considering the catastrophic 7.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated the region in 2015, killing nearly 9,000 people and causing widespread damage to infrastructure.

In neighboring Tibet, Chinese authorities also reported a strong earthquake that shook the mountainous region near the Nepal-Tibet border. The earthquake in Tibet, which occurred at 6:51 AM local time, was recorded at a magnitude of 7.1 by the USGS, though China’s earthquake monitoring agency classified it at 6.8. The tremor was felt in several communities located within a 5-kilometer radius of the epicenter, situated at an altitude of about 4,200 meters (13,800 feet) at a depth of about 10 km..

The earthquake’s epicenter in Tibet was approximately 380 kilometers (240 miles) from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Residents in nearby areas reported strong tremors, prompting them to rush out of their homes in alarm. Despite the intensity of the quake, Chinese state media has reported no immediate casualties or significant damage. Local authorities are continuing to assess the situation, and further updates regarding the potential impacts, including the risk of landslides, are awaited.

This earthquake follows a series of seismic events in the region, with authorities and seismologists closely monitoring developments. Given Nepal’s location in a highly active seismic zone, which has witnessed major earthquakes in the past, including the deadly 2015 Gorkha quake, both Nepalese and Indian authorities have issued advisories urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks.

Rescue teams in both Nepal and India are on high alert, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has asked citizens to stay informed and follow the guidance of local authorities. Emergency services are ready to respond should any structural damage or casualties be reported in the coming hours.

At this time, no fatalities or severe damage have been confirmed, and the situation is being closely monitored by both local and international agencies.

Amit Shah Proposes Renaming Kashmir to Kashyap, Advocates for Rewriting Indian History Based on Facts

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,  January 3, 2025, Kolkata : Union Home Minister Amit Shah has made a significant statement regarding the renaming of cities and districts, suggesting that Kashmir could be renamed to “Kashyap.” Speaking at the launch of the book Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh through the Ages in New Delhi, Shah criticized the distortion of Kashmir’s historical identity. He claimed that the name “Kashmir” had been “distorted” over time and referred to an ancient text, an 8,000-year-old book that mentions both Kashmir and Jhelum, asserting that “who can say whose Kashmir?”

Shah emphasized Kashmir’s unwavering connection to India, stating that it has always been an integral part of the nation. He argued that history should not be written to please any political regime, referencing the colonial period and the post-independence era when history was often shaped to suit the rulers of the time. “History is not written sitting in Lutyens’ Delhi. The time for writing history to please the rulers is over,” he remarked.

The Home Minister also appealed to historians, urging them to write India’s history based on evidence, not political convenience. He pointed out that for centuries, history was written with the intention of pleasing those in power, but now it was time to “break free” from that tradition. He urged historians to document India’s rich and diverse history, particularly the significance of Kashmir’s culture and its contribution to the Indian subcontinent.

Shah highlighted Kashmir’s profound cultural and spiritual ties with India, citing the destruction of temples in Ladakh, the mistakes made in Kashmir after independence, and the subsequent corrections that followed. He also referenced important landmarks like Shankaracharya’s mention of the Silk Route and the Hemis Math to prove that Kashmir has long been a cornerstone of India’s cultural foundation. He further noted that Sufi, Buddhist, and Shaivite monasteries had all flourished in Kashmir, emphasizing the region’s central role in the history of Indian civilization.

The Home Minister stressed that India’s 10,000-year-old culture is present in every part of the country, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, Gandhara to Odisha, and Bengal to Assam. He argued that those who view the country solely through a geopolitical lens fail to grasp the deeper cultural and historical ties that bind the nation together.

Shah’s comments on renaming Kashmir to Kashyap and his call for a more fact-based historical narrative have ignited a renewed debate on the region’s identity and the interpretation of India’s past.

Investigators also revealed that the vehicle used in the attack had been rented through a platform called Turo and contained multiple suspected explosive devices.

The series of events has sparked widespread concern over security threats and raised questions about the increasing risk of coordinated terrorist activities. Authorities are continuing their investigations into both incidents, as the nation grapples with the fallout from these attacks.

India Extends Support to Bangladesh with 468 Tons of Potatoes Amid Soaring Prices

Baby Chakraborty, Kolkata, December 15, 2024 : In a significant gesture of bilateral support, India has exported 468 metric tons of potatoes to Bangladesh to help mitigate the soaring prices in the neighboring country. As food costs escalate in Bangladesh, especially for essential items like potatoes, India has stepped in once again to assist its eastern neighbor.

The consignment, which arrived by freight train, reached the Benapole Land Port Railway Station in Jessore, Bangladesh. According to Bangladeshi media reports, including Bangla Tribune, the relevant authorities in Bangladesh are expected to begin unloading the shipment starting Saturday. The shipment consists of 9,460 bags of potatoes, weighing a total of 468,000 kg, and was sent from Malda, West Bengal, by Tata Traders, an importing company based in Chapainawabganj, Rajshahi.

The shipment, valued at approximately 1,07,640 US dollars, comes at a crucial time when food prices in Bangladesh have been climbing sharply, putting immense pressure on the daily lives of the general population. The rising cost of essential commodities, including potatoes, has sparked widespread unrest and concern, especially among the economically disadvantaged groups.

While the situation is increasingly tense, with growing discontent among the people, the arrival of the potato shipment from India has provided some immediate relief. The import of potatoes is seen as a necessary step to stabilize the market and address the food security concerns of Bangladesh’s population, particularly in rural areas where prices have been prohibitive.

However, in the midst of this economic crisis, certain extremist factions within Bangladesh have seized the opportunity to stoke anti-India sentiments. These groups have attempted to divert public attention from the pressing economic issues by raising political objections against India. Despite these efforts, the focus for most citizens remains on securing affordable food supplies in the face of soaring prices.

The arrival of this large shipment is a testament to the strong trade relations between India and Bangladesh, underscoring India’s role as a crucial partner in supporting its neighbor during times of economic hardship. The timely supply of essential goods like potatoes is expected to alleviate some of the pressure on the Bangladeshi market and provide relief to the country’s struggling consumers.

Debate Intensifies Over ‘One Nation, One Election’: Cabinet Clears Bill Amid Opposition Protests

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 14, 2024, Delhi : The Indian political landscape is abuzz with debates following the cabinet’s approval of the much-discussed ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill. The proposal, which seeks to synchronize Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, has drawn sharp reactions across the spectrum. While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has championed the initiative as a step toward efficiency and unity, opposition parties have raised strong objections, arguing that the move undermines India’s federal structure.

Speculation about the bill’s introduction in the ongoing winter session of Parliament has now been confirmed. Reports suggest that the bill could be tabled as early as next week. If presented, it will require approval in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and constitutional amendments will be necessary to implement the changes. Political analysts believe this poses a significant challenge for the BJP, which currently lacks the two-thirds majority needed to ensure the bill’s passage.

The opposition bloc has criticized the bill as an attack on India’s diverse democratic fabric. Citing concerns over the practicality and constitutional implications of the proposal, they have warned that it may centralize power and dilute regional autonomy. Opposition leaders argue that the simultaneous conduct of elections could disadvantage smaller parties and regional issues by overshadowing them with national campaigns.

On the other hand, the BJP has remained steadfast in its advocacy for the measure. Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently stated that the bill represents a transformative moment for the country, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of administrative and electoral reform. Proponents argue that simultaneous elections would reduce the financial burden and administrative disruptions caused by frequent polls across the nation.

Despite the BJP’s confidence, political observers caution that implementing ‘One Nation, One Election’ will require careful navigation of legal, logistical, and political hurdles. The constitutional amendments necessary for this change involve extensive debate and consultation, not only in Parliament but also with state governments and other stakeholders.

As the country waits for the bill’s formal introduction in Parliament, the issue continues to spark intense discussion. While the government hails it as a step toward streamlined governance, critics remain firm in their belief that it may erode the essence of India’s pluralistic democracy. All eyes are now on the next parliamentary session, where this contentious bill is set to take center stage.

Central Report Highlights BJP-ruled States Face Higher Inflation Rates Than West Bengal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,  December 7, 2024, Kolkata : According to the latest statistics from the Union Finance Ministry, inflation rates in BJP-ruled states have been significantly higher than in West Bengal, contradicting the ruling party’s claims about economic performance. The report, which was submitted to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Inflation, provides a comprehensive comparison of inflation trends across Indian states for the period between April and September 2024.

The national average inflation rate during this six-month period was 4.6 percent, but West Bengal’s inflation was notably lower, recorded at just 3.7 percent—well below the national average. However, the report indicates that the inflation rate in twelve states exceeded the national average, with the majority of these states being under BJP governance. Only Kerala, which is governed by the Left Front, and Karnataka, under Congress rule, were exceptions.

The Union Finance Ministry’s findings revealed that Odisha had the highest inflation rate during this period, followed closely by Bihar. Both states were followed by Uttar Pradesh and Assam, which ranked jointly in third place. These states are all governed by BJP Chief Ministers, including Hemant Biswa Sarma’s Assam and Yogi Adityanath’s Uttar Pradesh.

The publication of this report has caused considerable unease within the BJP, as it highlights a significant economic disparity between states governed by the party and those governed by other political formations. While West Bengal, led by Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress, reported lower inflation than the national average, BJP-ruled states have struggled with higher inflation rates, drawing criticism over the party’s economic management at the state level.

Political analysts suggest that this discrepancy could become a key issue in upcoming state and national elections, as the opposition parties, particularly in Bengal, may use the report to challenge the BJP’s governance model, which is often associated with claims of better economic performance.

The Finance Ministry report underscores the uneven economic recovery and inflationary pressures across India, with the ruling party now facing uncomfortable questions about its ability to manage the economy in states under its control. As the debate over inflation intensifies, the focus will likely shift to the central government’s role in addressing regional disparities and ensuring that inflationary burdens are not disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable sections of society.
