Eight Miscreants Arrested in West Bengal for Robbery, Firearms and Vehicles Seized

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 4, 2024 Hooghly :  In a major breakthrough, eight criminals from Jharkhand were arrested in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Monday night, following a joint operation by local police and the Special Task Force (STF). The police recovered firearms, ammunition, two vehicles, and various robbery tools from the suspects, who had reportedly gathered in the Janai Chikrand area of Chanditala with the intent to commit a robbery.

The operation unfolded after the STF received a tip-off regarding the presence of a group of armed miscreants in the area. Acting on this information, the Chanditala police, in collaboration with the STF, swiftly conducted a raid. The police apprehended the suspects, who were found in possession of three pistols, 15 rounds of ammunition, and several vehicle number plates, some of which were linked to Jharkhand.

During a press conference at the Superintendent of Police (Rural) office in Hooghly, Superintendent of Police Kamnashis Sen confirmed that the arrested individuals were planning to carry out a robbery. “The criminals had gathered with the specific purpose of committing a robbery. The arrested suspects include Sajjad Alam (28), Bikki Gaur Thakur (28), Shahid Ali (36), and Sagar Prasad (36), all of whom are from Jharkhand. In addition, Sanatan Garai (33), Kajal Bauri (37), Alam Ansari (40), and Raju Chowdhury (40), all residents of Purulia, were arrested. The police seized two 7mm pistols, a pipe gun, a magazine, two vehicles—a Bolero car and a motorcycle, both with Jharkhand number plates—along with iron rods, lock-breaking tools, and other materials used for criminal activities.”

The police also found several items typically associated with robberies, including bhojali (a traditional weapon) and lock-breaking devices. Authorities have registered a case against the suspects under various sections, including the Arms Act, and they will be interrogated in police custody. The investigation will focus on uncovering the group’s past criminal activities and connections.

“The criminals are suspected to have been involved in several robberies along the border areas of Jharkhand and Bengal. They are part of a larger criminal syndicate that operates in these regions,” Superintendent Sen added. He assured the public that the police would investigate the extent of the group’s criminal activities and any possible linkages to larger, organized crime networks.

The successful operation highlights the growing collaboration between local police and the STF in tackling cross-border crime in West Bengal, especially in areas that have witnessed an increase in criminal activity in recent months.

Authorities have vowed to continue their efforts to dismantle such criminal networks, which often operate in the border areas, and have urged the public to remain vigilant. Further investigation is ongoing to uncover any additional crimes the group may have committed in the past.

Major Police Reshuffle in West Bengal Amid Rising Law and Order Concerns

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 4, 2024, Kolkata : In a sweeping move, the West Bengal government has executed a major reshuffle within the state police department, affecting at least four key positions involving key changes in leadership across multiple senior positions. The reshuffle comes amid heightened concerns over law and order following a series of incidents that have raised questions about the state’s security apparatus.

The reshuffle is seen as part of an effort to strengthen the police force’s performance and improve accountability. Among the most significant changes, R. Rajasekaran, the former Additional Director General (I) of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been transferred to the position of Additional Director General (Training). Rajasekaran’s successor in the CID role, however, has yet to be announced.

The reshuffle follows a series of incidents that have sparked growing concerns about the state’s law and order situation, particularly after allegations emerged involving out-of-state elements. Notably, the recent arms recovery case in Sealdah and the controversial Kasba incident, which allegedly involved Bihar-based criminals, have prompted public outcry and political scrutiny. These incidents have significantly raised questions about the efficiency of the state police.

During a meeting at Nabanna, the Chief Minister of West Bengal expressed strong dissatisfaction with the functioning of certain sections of the CID and the police force. She took to task the state’s Director General of Police (DGP) to take swift and decisive corrective actions.

“I will reshuffle the CID completely. If there are complaints against anyone, they must be cross-checked thoroughly. If the complaints are valid, strict action must follow,” the Chief Minister said. “No one will stop that action. And if anyone tries, I will not listen,” she added, indicating her zero-tolerance approach toward inefficiency and corruption within the police force.

As part of the broader reshuffle, Damayanti Sen, the current Additional Director General (Training), has been moved to the position of Additional Director General (Policy Making). In this elevated role, Sen will oversee the development and implementation of new policies for the state’s police force. Meanwhile, R. Sivakumar, the outgoing Additional Director General of Policy Making, has been appointed as the new Additional Director General of the Enforcement Branch (EB), a key role aimed at improving law enforcement operations.

In addition, Rajeev Mishra, the current head of the Enforcement Branch, has been shifted to the post of Additional Director General (Organisation and Modernization). This role is crucial in the ongoing effort to modernize the state police and improve organizational efficiency.

The reshuffle is not entirely unexpected, as the Chief Minister had indicated earlier that there would be significant changes within the CID and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in an effort to intensify the fight against corruption. In a candid admission, she acknowledged that corruption persists among some lower-level police officers, which tarnishes the image of the state’s law enforcement agencies.

“The political leaders are often criticized for corruption. If any politician is involved in a corrupt act of just Rs 5, it is exaggerated to Rs 550,” the Chief Minister remarked. “However, politicians think long and hard before engaging in any form of corruption. It is the lower-level officers and staff in the police force who, unfortunately, get involved in corruption, and this is what gives a bad name to the state.”

Despite the sweeping changes at the top, sources within the police department have suggested that the reshuffle is part of routine administrative restructuring. However, the state has yet to announce a replacement for the vacant position of Intelligence Chief, which remains unfilled following the recent changes.

This reshuffle reflects the government’s growing determination to address the concerns over law and order in the state, as well as a renewed focus on improving the performance and accountability of the police force. With key leadership roles now reassigned, political and public observers will be closely watching for further developments in what is seen as a critical moment for West Bengal’s law enforcement system.

Minister Pulak Roy Predicts TMC Victory in Upcoming Assembly Elections, Attacks Opposition at Maheshpur Event

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,  December 3, 2024, Kolkata :  Public Works Department Minister Pulak Roy, a prominent leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), has confidently predicted that his party will secure a fourth consecutive term in the upcoming 26th assembly elections, targeting 260 seats. Speaking at a blood donation camp and children’s reunion festival organized by the Maheshpur region TMC, Roy reiterated his belief in the party’s imminent victory and launched a scathing attack on opposition political parties.

The event, held in Maheshpur, saw over 200 blood donors contribute to the cause, prompting the minister to refer to the gathering as a “blood festival” in recognition of the generous donations. Besides his remarks about the election outcome, Roy took the opportunity to criticize the 34-year tenure of the Left Front government in West Bengal, which he claimed, despite its popular mandate, failed to stand by the people. Additionally, the minister directed sharp criticism at the BJP-led central government, accusing it of being out of touch with the needs of the people.

Roy’s statements were made alongside other key leaders of the Trinamool Congress, including Gopinath Banerjee, Vice President of Howrah Rural District TMC; Ajay Mandal, Chairman of Howrah Zilla Parishad; Atindra Shekhar Pramanik, President of Uluberia-1 Panchayat Samiti; and Azizul Islam Mollah, President of Maheshpur region TMC. The event also featured other notable figures such as Pooja Makhal, President of Maheshpur Gram Panchayat, Sheikh Sahabar, Vice President of Maheshpur Gram Panchayat, and Debashish Banerjee, President of Howrah Rural District TMC Youth Congress.

The gathering served not only as a community-focused event but also as a platform for political messaging, as the TMC continues to rally support in anticipation of the upcoming elections. With the opposition in his sights, Pulak Roy’s bold predictions and critique of the current political climate reflect the TMC’s continued determination to maintain its stronghold in the state.

Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha Protests Attacks on Minorities in Bangladesh, Calls for Boycott of Bangladeshis in India

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,  December 3, 2024, Kolkata : In a bold move following the recent turmoil in Bangladesh, the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, one of India’s oldest political parties, has expressed deep discontent with the ongoing violence against minority Hindus and moderate Muslims in Bangladesh. Led by state president Dr. Chandrachud Goswami, a delegation from the Mahasabha submitted a formal deputation to the Bangladesh High Commission, condemning the barbaric attacks by jihadi terrorists and the trampling of the Indian flag in the neighboring country.

The Mahasabha has already taken significant steps in response, initiating a social boycott of Bangladeshis seeking medical treatment in India. This action stems from what they describe as the unjust arrest of Chinmayakrishna Prabhu in Bangladesh, the brutal attack on his lawyer Ramen Roy, and the rising violence against women and children by extremist groups. Dr. Chandrachud Goswami emphasized in his statement that the Mahasabha does not condemn all Muslims from Bangladesh but pointed out that the perpetrators of these violent acts are driven by Islamic fundamentalism. He reminded that Bangladesh’s independence was achieved with the sacrifice of Indian soldiers, whose blood is reflected in the dark red of the Bangladesh flag.

The Mahasabha’s statement further argued that the Bangladeshi Muslims who come to India to escape violence must take a stand against these terrorist factions upon their return. Goswami highlighted that the actions of these extremists are tarnishing the image of Islam globally, leading to widespread hatred and condemnation of Bangladeshis. The Mahasabha has vowed to continue its campaign, urging that Bangladeshis seeking treatment in India should not be allowed to rent accommodation, dine in restaurants, or purchase goods in Indian shops until Bangladesh demonstrates mutual respect by officially apologizing for the actions of the extremist factions in their country and flying the Indian flag in solidarity.

Advocate Dinesh Pani, the legal advisor to the Hindu Mahasabha, condemned the deterioration of the legal system in Bangladesh and the attacks on Hindu and moderate Muslim lawyers. He also signaled that, given the ongoing human rights violations in Bangladesh, the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha may be compelled to take the matter to the international courts to hold the Bangladeshi government accountable for the oppression of minorities.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her strong support for the central government’s proposal in the state assembly to send peacekeepers to Bangladesh if the situation worsens.

The Hindu Mahasabha’s delegation to the Bangladesh High Commission today included Dr. Chandrachud Goswami, Dinesh Pani, social worker Anamika Mondal, and Atanu Basu, among others, who presented their formal protest and called for swift action from the Bangladeshi government.

BSF Seizes 18 Gold Biscuits in Separate Operations Along Indo-Bangladesh Border, Smuggler Arrested

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 3, 2024, North 24 Parganas : Vigilant jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF) South Bengal Frontier have successfully seized 18 gold biscuits during separate operations along the Indo-Bangladesh border in North 24 Parganas and Malda districts of West Bengal. The total weight of the recovered gold is 2.1 kg, with an estimated market value of Rs 1.62 crore.

The first operation took place near the Tarali-1 border post, where BSF personnel from the 143rd Battalion apprehended a smuggler attempting to cross into India with six gold biscuits hidden in the fuel tank of his motorcycle. Acting on specific intelligence regarding gold smuggling, the jawans increased surveillance at the Hakimpur checkpoint. At around 4:30 pm, they intercepted the suspicious motorcyclist, and a thorough search revealed the hidden gold. The arrested smuggler, during initial interrogation, revealed that he had received the gold from an unknown individual in Bangladesh and was instructed to deliver it to another smuggler in Bithari for a promised payment of Rs 1200. However, he was stopped before the transfer could take place.

In a second operation later the same day, BSF jawans from the 115th Battalion at the Boyraghat Border Outpost in Malda conducted a search at Boltala Ghat based on similar intelligence. A suspicious motorcyclist was seen approaching the area, but upon noticing the BSF personnel, the individual abandoned the motorcycle and fled the scene. Upon inspecting the motorcycle, the BSF team found 12 gold biscuits cleverly concealed inside the bike’s self-start mechanism.

The smuggler arrested in North 24 Parganas, along with the six gold biscuits, has been handed over to the Customs Department in Tentulia for further investigation. Similarly, the 12 gold biscuits recovered in Malda have been transferred to the Customs Department in Jangipur for continued inquiry.

The BSF continues to ramp up efforts along the Indo-Bangladesh border to curb the smuggling of contraband, including gold, and remains vigilant in securing the border area.

Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir Apologizes After Controversial Remarks, Reaffirms Support for Mamata Banerjee

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,  December 3, 2024, Kolkata : Bharatpur MLA Humayun Kabir has publicly apologized after his recent comments caused a stir within the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Kabir had earlier expressed dissatisfaction with certain party leaders, particularly requesting that TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee be appointed as the state’s Police Minister. His remarks led to criticism and a reprimand from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a tense session in the state assembly.

In his apology, Humayun Kabir clarified that he had never questioned Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, acknowledging that his comments were misinterpreted. “I apologize for what I said publicly. I never intended to undermine the leadership of Mamata Banerjee. I am happy with the way she addressed issues during the meeting with the MLAs,” he stated.

Kabir’s initial remarks, which included an attack on state minister Firhad Hakim, triggered a controversy. He had alleged that in his constituency, no one was available to address his grievances, which further escalated tensions within the party. The dispute reached its peak when Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conducted a meeting with all TMC MLAs to address the party’s internal matters. During this meeting, Mamata Banerjee asserted that she and Subrata Bakshi would handle the party’s affairs, emphasizing her central role in guiding the organization.

In a shift of tone following the meeting, Kabir expressed his respect for the Chief Minister’s leadership, stating, “The Chief Minister has guided us well. She said that everyone is a member of the same family, and it feels good. This time, she spoke in a completely opposite tone. She reaffirmed that Mamata Banerjee is the supreme leader of our party.”

The controversy surrounding Kabir’s comments comes at a time of heightened tensions within the TMC, as internal rifts and demands for greater representation have surfaced. However, Kabir’s apology and reaffirmation of loyalty to Mamata Banerjee are seen as efforts to restore harmony within the party.

The Chief Minister’s handling of the situation reflects her resolve to maintain unity within the TMC as she prepares for future political challenges. As the situation develops, it will be interesting to see how the TMC leadership navigates the internal dynamics of the party in the coming months.

Mamata Banerjee Demands Increased Share of Central Tax Revenue, Seeks 50% Allocation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,  December 3, 2024, Kolkata : In a bold move, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has called for an increase in the state’s share of central tax revenue from the current 41% to 50%. Banerjee made this demand during a meeting with the Finance Commission at Nabanna on Tuesday. The Chief Minister argued that this increase would significantly enhance the state’s financial resources, enabling the government to better fund social welfare projects and infrastructure development.

The demand for a larger share of the central tax money is not unique to West Bengal. In a separate meeting, opposition leaders from various parties, including the CPM’s Mohammad Salim and BJP’s Shankar Ghosh, also voiced their support for the 50% share. The Finance Commission representatives, who met with both the Chief Minister and political party representatives on Tuesday, acknowledged that most states have raised similar requests for a higher percentage of the tax allocation. They confirmed that this matter is currently under investigation and will be discussed further with higher authorities.

In addition to the tax revenue issue, Banerjee also raised the topic of central arrears, highlighting the state’s pending dues in various sectors. She emphasized that the timely release of these funds would greatly benefit social development initiatives in West Bengal. However, the Finance Commission representatives clarified that their mandate is focused solely on tax revenue distribution and that issues related to central arrears fall outside their jurisdiction.

The meeting, which began around 12:30 pm, was attended by Chief Minister Banerjee and 12 of her Cabinet Ministers. In the afternoon, the Finance Commission held a separate session with political representatives from CPM and BJP, both of whom expressed support for the Chief Minister’s request for a 50% tax share. According to the Finance Commission, they have already visited 13 states and found that similar demands have been raised across the board. The representatives assured that they would present their findings and recommendations to higher authorities for further consideration.

As the debate over the state’s financial allocation continues, it remains to be seen how the central government will respond to the growing calls for an increased share of tax revenues. The outcome of this issue could have significant implications for West Bengal’s future development and its political landscape.

Shuvendu Adhikari Claims Mass Exodus of Bangladeshi Infiltrators, Accuses TMC of Voter List Manipulation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 3, 2024, Kolkata : In a series of controversial statements, the Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Shuvendu Adhikari, has claimed that a significant number of Bangladeshi infiltrators, including Rohingyas, have fled the state due to pressure from his political actions and the Hindu community’s support. Adhikari, addressing journalists near the West Bengal Legislative Assembly on Tuesday afternoon, boldly stated, “One lakh legal Bangladeshis have fled because of my courage and the roar of the Sanatanis. Look at the hotels in New Market; they are empty. They have fled, and we will continue to chase out the rest.”

This latest outburst from the BJP leader follows similar statements made in a road meeting in Jadavpur, Kolkata, and a public address in Bangaon on Monday, where he reiterated his stance on removing illegal immigrants from the state. He went on to claim that areas like New Market and Shyamoli Paribahan are now free of Rohingya migrants, alleging that they had been forced to leave due to his relentless actions and the backing of the Hindu community.

Adhikari also showed journalists photographs he claimed depicted Rohingyas living in various parts of the state, including Howrah and Dankuni. He accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of orchestrating a conspiracy to alter the state’s demographic makeup by sheltering illegal Bangladeshi Muslim immigrants, particularly Rohingyas. “These people entered India without visas. How many Rohingyas will the TMC accept?” he asked, asserting that the TMC had manipulated voter lists by including the names of illegal migrants.

Continuing his criticism of the TMC, Adhikari targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of pandering to both Muslims and Hindus for political gain. He claimed that the Chief Minister is “afraid of Hindus” and is now making efforts to retain the support of the Hindu community, which he argued had united against her government.

The accusations and remarks have sparked controversy in the state, with the TMC dismissing them as baseless and politically motivated. The ruling party continues to deny the presence of illegal immigrants in West Bengal, insisting that such claims are part of a divisive political narrative.

The ongoing debate over the issue of illegal immigration has been a contentious topic in West Bengal politics, with the BJP consistently accusing the TMC of aiding the infiltration of migrants from Bangladesh and Myanmar. However, the TMC has denied all such allegations, labeling them as attempts to create fear and unrest in the state.

As the political tension over this issue intensifies, it remains to be seen how the state government and opposition will navigate these contentious claims in the lead-up to the next election cycle.

Civic Volunteer Accused of Sexual Assault and Extortion in Murshidabad

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 3, 2024, Murshidabad : A civic volunteer attached to Domkal police station has been accused of rape, blackmail, and extortion, sending shockwaves through the community. Abdul Salam, the accused, allegedly coerced a housewife into repeated sexual encounters under the pretext of marriage and reportedly filmed these incidents without her consent.

The victim has claimed that Salam used the video recordings to blackmail her, threatening to release the explicit footage if she refused to comply with his demands. According to the complaint, Salam initiated contact with the housewife through phone conversations and deceptive promises, which eventually led to him visiting her home in her husband’s absence. The victim alleges that Salam stole ₹90,000 in cash and gold jewelry during the encounters, further exploiting her vulnerability.

The situation in Domkal has grown increasingly tense as residents express outrage over the allegations. The housewife’s complaint, filed at Domkal police station, accuses Salam of multiple sexual assaults and extortion. The police have charged him under relevant sections, including those addressing sexual assault and blackmail.

The victim stated that Salam manipulated her with claims of wealth and power and later threatened her with the release of compromising material. These threats reportedly continued even as the victim’s household became aware of the situation, escalating domestic strife.

As investigations unfold, questions about accountability and the misuse of authority by civic volunteers have taken center stage. Local residents are calling for a thorough investigation and strict action to ensure justice for the victim. Meanwhile, the police department has refrained from making any official statements, citing the ongoing investigation.

The incident has sparked widespread discussions about the need for stricter oversight of civic volunteers and their conduct, highlighting the vulnerability of citizens in such cases of abuse of power.

Ayan Shil Granted Conditional Bail in Recruitment Corruption Case, Remains in Custody Due to CBI Charges

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 2, 2024, Hooghly :  Ayan Shil, a prominent businessman and promoter from Hooghly, has been granted conditional bail in the high-profile recruitment corruption case that has shaken West Bengal. The bail was granted by Justice Shuvra Ghosh of the Calcutta High Court, who set a personal bond of Rs 10 lakh for Shil’s release. However, his release will be subject to several strict conditions, and he remains in jail due to separate charges in a related investigation.

Shil, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March 2023, is closely linked to Shantanu Banerjee, the expelled Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader and one of the key accused in the corruption scandal. Before his arrest, the ED had conducted a search operation at Shil’s residence, office, and flat, uncovering crucial documents related to the scam, including Xerox copies of multiple OMR sheets used in fraudulent recruitment activities.

While Shil has been granted bail in the ED case, the conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court include the surrender of his passport, restrictions on changing his mobile number, and a requirement to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation. Despite these developments, Shil’s release from custody will not be immediate, as he faces additional charges in a separate case being handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The CBI is probing Shil’s involvement in the primary recruitment corruption case, and it is in connection with these charges that he will remain behind bars for the time being. Shil is said to have strong links to other accused individuals in the case, including Shantanu Banerjee, Santu Gangopadhyay, and Kuntal Ghosh—figures with deep political and administrative ties.

While Shil’s bail in the ED case marks a significant development, several other individuals connected to the corruption scandal, including Manik Bhattacharya, Arpita Mukherjee, and Kuntal Ghosh, have also been granted bail in recent weeks. Notably, former state minister Partha Chatterjee, another key figure in the case, has not yet been granted bail, and his legal proceedings are ongoing.

The case has attracted widespread attention due to its implications for public recruitment processes in the state and the involvement of high-profile political figures. As the investigation continues, the role of various individuals in the recruitment scam is under scrutiny, with more developments expected in the coming weeks.

For now, Shil’s legal team will have to navigate the complexities of the CBI case while complying with the conditions of his bail, which will determine his fate in the months ahead.

Mamata Banerjee Stresses Party Discipline, Public Outreach, and 2026 Polls in Key Parliamentary Meeting

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 2, 2024, Kolkata : In a significant address to Trinamool Congress (TMC) legislators, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee underscored the importance of party discipline, enhanced public outreach, and strategic preparations for the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections. The meeting, held at the state assembly, was aimed at galvanizing party representatives ahead of future electoral challenges and addressing internal concerns regarding conduct and communication.

Mamata, who has consistently emphasized the need for strong organizational coherence, urged her colleagues to adopt a more focused approach in their interactions with the public. “Public representatives must strengthen their relations with the people, ensuring that no one is left behind in the government’s development initiatives,” she remarked. The Chief Minister also issued clear directives to avoid controversial remarks that could tarnish the party’s image.

Addressing concerns over public comments, Mamata told the MLAs: “Do not make any statements that may embarrass the party. We must project unity and discipline.” She further encouraged the legislators to engage in grassroots work, instructing them to go door-to-door and greet constituents. “There’s no need for elaborate speeches; just simple engagement. Ask questions with understanding, and ministers should respond appropriately,” she added.

In a notable move to tighten internal monitoring, Mamata delegated a new responsibility to TMC Minister Arup Biswas. Biswas will now oversee the activities of the party’s MLAs, ensuring they stay on track with their duties. A new WhatsApp group will be set up to keep tabs on the MLAs’ movements and activities, including when and where they are expected to be. The aim is to maintain a cohesive and disciplined approach as the party gears up for the 2026 elections.

“All MLAs must think about 2026,” Mamata stated. “You need to stay connected with your areas. Narayan Goswami, stay close to your constituency, and Siddikulla Chowdhury, address the issues in the blocks. We need the new MLAs to spend at least seven days in their constituencies to learn the ropes,” she instructed.

The Chief Minister also brought attention to the importance of handling sensitive issues within the party. She expressed concern over ministers and MLAs making controversial remarks, advising them to avoid unnecessary statements that could harm the government’s reputation. “We need to be cautious with the questions we ask and the issues we address. Ministers should be well-informed on all matters,” she said.

Mamata also acknowledged concerns related to student and youth organizations at the district level. She indicated that these concerns would be addressed systematically in the coming weeks, and encouraged a more inclusive approach to engagement across the state. In a final note to party members, she called for unity, stating that if the opposition does not wish to engage, the TMC itself should take the lead and be proactive in its outreach, including sending representatives to Delhi as needed.

The meeting highlighted Mamata’s strategic vision for the party’s unity, discipline, and electoral preparation, setting a clear tone for the road ahead as the TMC prepares for the crucial 2026 Assembly elections.

Study finds how pollution can increase risk of inflammation pregnancy complications

PTI, December 02, 2024, New Delhi : Exposure to PM2.5 pollution could lead to higher inflammation levels among pregnant women potentially resulting in adverse birth outcomes, such as low birth weight and preterm birth, according to a study examining how pollution alters human DNA.

The findings, published in the journal Science Advances, provided a new understanding of the biological routes through which air pollution affects pregnancy and birth outcomes, researchers said.

Particulate matter (PM) 2.5 pollution is caused by particles sized 2.5 micrometres or less. Common sources are vehicular and industrial emissions, while natural ones can include carbon from wildfires and dust.

The study, led by Harvard University’s School of Public Health, US, found that exposure to PM2.5 can influence the histones of pregnant women. Histones are proteins found in chromosomes, vital to DNA structure and cell function.

Air pollution can, thus, disrupt the normal balance of cytokine genes — genes involved in producing immune responses — and lead to increased inflammation in both women and foetuses, the researchers said.

Among pregnant women, the increased inflammation could be related to adverse pregnancy outcomes, they said.

“Our findings highlight the importance of minimising air pollution exposure in pregnant women to protect maternal and foetal health,” co-author Youn Soo Jung, a research associate at Harvard University’s School of Public Health, said.

“Policy interventions to improve air quality as well as clinical guidelines to help pregnant women reduce their exposure to pollution could have a direct impact on reducing pregnancy complications,” Soo Jung said.

While previous studies have found links between PM2.5 exposure and complications in maternal and child health including low birth weight and developmental delays, the study is the first to examine the effects of PM2.5 on maternal and foetal health at a cell level, the authors said.

The study involved both non-pregnant women and 20-week pregnant women. Average exposure to PM2.5 was calculated using air quality data from the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Within each cell, the researchers were able to map changes to histones — the proteins that help control the release of cytokines, which are known to help regulate inflammation.

“These modifications in specific histones and cytokines could indicate the toxicological mechanism of PM2.5 exposure in inflammation, inflammasome pathway, and pregnancy complications,” the authors wrote.

Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha Calls for Boycott of Bangladeshis Over Atrocities on Hindus, Hospital Boycotts Treatment for Bangladeshis

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 1, 2024, Kolkata : In a bold move, J.N. Roy Hospital has announced its decision to refuse medical treatment to Bangladeshi nationals, citing recent atrocities against minority Hindus in Bangladesh and the disrespect shown to the Indian national flag. This move comes as part of growing protests against the violence faced by Hindus in Bangladesh and the perceived dishonoring of India’s national symbols.

The hospital’s decision has been backed by Dr. Chandrachud Goswami, the state president of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, who went a step further by declaring that if the atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh are not immediately stopped, there will be a social boycott of Bangladeshis coming to India for medical treatment. Dr. Goswami’s statement calls for more drastic measures, including the denial of basic services such as food and retail transactions to Bangladeshis visiting India. He stated that, “Given that Bangladeshis’ hands are stained with the blood of innocent Hindus, they should be excluded from receiving medical care, eating at hotels, or selling products in shops in India.”

A representative delegation from the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, led by Dr. Goswami, visited J.N. Roy Hospital to commend the hospital’s stand. The group honored hospital officials and healthcare workers with wreaths, letters of support, Dr. Goswami’s doctoral thesis, and chocolates. In their address, the Mahasabha members criticized Bangladeshis, accusing them of hypocrisy for disrespecting the Indian flag despite benefiting from India’s role in Bangladesh’s independence. Dr. Goswami emphasized, “India stood by Bangladesh during its struggle for independence, sacrificing the lives of thousands of Indian soldiers. If India hadn’t intervened, Bangladesh would not exist today.”

The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha also condemned the red color of the rising sun in Bangladesh’s flag, describing it as a stark contrast to the blood shed by Indian soldiers during the Bangladesh Liberation War. The Mahasabha members pointed out that, unlike the situation in Bangladesh, such dishonesty and disrespect for national symbols are not observed in any of the over 100 Muslim-majority countries around the world.

In addition to their criticism of the Bangladesh government, the Mahasabha voiced their support for Chinmayakrishna Das Prabhu, who was unjustly arrested in Bangladesh. They also expressed concerns about Nobel Peace Prize laureate Mohammad Yunus, claiming that since Yunus took over the government of Bangladesh, oppression and anarchy have reached unprecedented levels.

Dr. Goswami and the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha members have urged the Indian government to take swift action to protect traditional Hindus and moderate Muslims in Bangladesh from rising Islamic extremism. He further praised the West Bengal government for its support of the central government’s stance on the Bangladesh issue. Dr. Goswami expressed confidence that the central government would act decisively to safeguard the security and interests of Indian citizens.

Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee’s Remarks on Waqf Property Spark Controversy, BJP’s Dilip Ghosh Responds with Criticism

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 1, 2024,  Kolkata: Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament (MP) Kalyan Banerjee’s comments on the Waqf Amendment Bill have sparked a political controversy, with sharp reactions from BJP leaders and other political opponents. On Sunday, Banerjee made a provocative statement regarding the Waqf Act during a protest meeting organized by TMC in Kolkata. Banerjee’s remarks, which were made at Rani Rashmoni, were aimed at criticizing the central government’s Waqf Amendment Bill. In his speech, he said, “Wherever a group of people offer prayers regularly, that place will be marked as Waqf property.”

Banerjee went on to suggest that even small groups—whether 25, 15, or even just five people—who pray at a particular location could potentially have that space declared as Waqf property. “If a place sees regular prayers, it could be deeded as a Waqf property,” he said, pointing to the broad implications of the current law and the proposed amendments.

Former state BJP president Dilip Ghosh, reacting to the comments, shared a video clip of Banerjee’s speech on his social media handle, X. Ghosh mocked the MP’s statement, writing, “If the Waqf Act is interpreted as per the demands of the Muslim community, places like markets, bus stands, train stations, and even Kalyan Banerjee’s house could be declared Waqf properties. The TMC office in Tiljala could also become Waqf property—essentially, any place where people pray regularly could be included.”

This exchange highlights the growing tension over the Waqf Amendment Bill, which aims to limit the powers of the Waqf Board and prevent the potential misuse of these powers. The Waqf Act, originally passed by Congress in the mid-20th century, has long been a point of contention. Critics argue that it grants excessive control to the Waqf Board, allowing it to claim various properties, including those of Hindu temples and villages, without the landowner’s consent.

The Waqf Act has faced significant criticism for allegedly favoring Muslim interests and undermining Hindu property rights. Several instances have fueled this concern, including reports that the Tamil Nadu Waqf Board has claimed a 1,400-year-old Hindu temple and a Hindu-majority village, while the Bihar Waqf Board has made similar claims over a predominantly Hindu village, ordering its eviction.

In response, the Narendra Modi-led central government introduced the Waqf Amendment Bill, seeking to curtail the expansive powers of the Waqf Board and ensure a more transparent process in the handling of such property disputes. The amendment has faced strong opposition from the Congress, Left parties, and several Islamic organizations. Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been particularly vocal in opposing the bill.

Kalyan Banerjee, known for his staunch opposition to the bill, has become a key figure in the resistance. His remarks on the possible consequences of the Waqf Act have stirred significant debate, positioning him as a leading critic of the central government’s proposed reforms.

As the debate intensifies, the Waqf Amendment Bill remains a flashpoint in the ongoing political discourse. With both the ruling party and opposition at odds, it remains to be seen how the law will evolve in the face of mounting political pressure from all sides.

Temporary Employees of Chinsurah Municipality in Hooghly Protest Over Unpaid Salaries, Warn of Disruption to Services

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 1, 2024,  Hooghly  :  Temporary employees of the Chinsurah Municipality in Hooghly have been raising concerns over unpaid salaries, which they claim have not been disbursed for several months. Their grievances have led to frequent protests at the municipality, with employees taking to the streets nearly every month to voice their dissatisfaction. Recently, the situation escalated as these employees went on strike, resulting in the failure of street lamps to light up in the city.

Despite these ongoing issues, the employees allege that no significant action has been taken by the municipal authorities to address their concerns. On Saturday, tensions reached a peak when the temporary workers surrounded the mayor and councilors during the municipality’s monthly board meeting. The siege lasted for approximately four hours before the mayor and councilors were finally freed.

In response to the continuing impasse, the temporary employees issued a stern warning that, starting from December 2, they would cease all municipal services. They have also taken their protest to the streets, riding in toto (auto-rickshaws) and broadcasting their message through loudspeakers across various parts of the city. The employees have been actively informing the public about their plight and seeking solidarity from the residents. Posters are also being distributed in different areas of Chinsurah, further spreading their message.

The employees, who work in several departments, including water supply, electricity, and garbage collection, have announced that they will suspend their work from tomorrow. This disruption in services is expected to create significant challenges for local residents, who rely on these municipal services in their daily lives. Many citizens have expressed concern about the potential impact, with some raising questions about the fairness of the situation.

One resident, Shampa Jana, shared her frustration: “If we do not get water from tomorrow, it will be a big problem. Where will we work from? The mayor of the municipality will have to see to this.”

The issue stems from the fact that Chinsurah Municipality, despite collecting municipal taxes from the public, has been struggling with financial instability. Reports suggest that the municipality’s expenses far exceed its income, leading to delays in salary payments and ongoing unrest among temporary workers.

It is reported that approximately 2,500 temporary employees work across various departments of the municipality. The delays in salary payments have created an ongoing cycle of protests, with no resolution in sight. As the situation continues to unfold, residents and local authorities are bracing for further disruptions to essential services, with a growing demand for a sustainable solution to the municipality’s financial woes.
