Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 24, 2024, Calcutta: In response to the devastating floods that have impacted Birbhum district, an action planning meeting was held on Tuesday to assess the situation and coordinate relief efforts. The relentless heavy rains over the past few days have caused significant chaos in the region, prompting swift action from the state government.

Kolkata Bids Farewell to 151-Year-Old Tram Tradition

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 24, 2024, Calcutta: After 151 years of service, the iconic trams of Kolkata, West Bengal, are set to retire from the city’s bustling streets. The West Bengal government announced this significant decision, marking the end of an era for one of the city’s most beloved modes of public transport.

Transport Minister Snehashis Chakraborty made the announcement on Monday, revealing that while the last operating tram lines from Dharmatala to Ballygunge and Dharmatala to Shyambazar will be discontinued, a two-kilometer heritage route from Dharmatala to Maidan will remain operational for tourists. This route aims to preserve the rich tradition and nostalgia associated with Kolkata’s trams.

The history of trams in Kolkata dates back to February 24, 1873, when horse-drawn trams first traversed the city. Over the years, the tram system evolved, with the introduction of electric trams in 1902, courtesy of the Calcutta Tramway Company Limited, which was registered in London. At its peak, the tram service connected various parts of the city, becoming an integral part of Kolkata’s urban landscape.

In celebration of its 150th anniversary, the city commemorated this milestone on February 24, 2023, with various events organized by the Calcutta Tram Company, highlighting the trams’ unique place in the hearts of Kolkata’s residents.

As Kolkata transitions away from its traditional tram system, the heritage route will serve as a reminder of the trams’ long-standing legacy, offering both locals and tourists a glimpse into the city’s rich transport history. This decision reflects a blend of modernization and tradition, ensuring that the spirit of Kolkata’s trams will continue to be celebrated, even as they bid farewell to their once-bustling routes.

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 23, 2024, Calcutta :  State opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari has filed a significant complaint regarding allegations of forgery connected to a death certificate. In a series of tweets, he raised questions about the RG Kar case, specifically asking, “Who identified the victim as the uncle of the deceased young woman? Who insisted on a swift autopsy? From whom did the threats originate?”

Adhikari also named the individual implicated in these allegations, suggesting that this person may be affiliated with the ruling Trinamool Congress party. This follows a lengthy interrogation of the individual on Sunday, during which he reportedly made alarming statements to reporters as he left.

According to a doctor involved in the case, the man identified himself as the victim’s uncle and allegedly threatened that a “river of blood” would flow if the autopsy was not completed by the end of the day. Abhijit Ganguly Threatens Hunger Strike in Banvasi Area

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, September 23, 2024, Calcutta — Tensions rose in the Banvasi area as BJP MP and former judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay confronted Trinamool leader Devanshu Bhattacharya, who pointedly remarked that Gangopadhyay had been absent from the region. In response to ongoing local issues, Gangopadhyay stated, “If things don’t improve, I will pitch a tent here and sit on hunger strike.”

His warning elicited mixed reactions, with one resident retorting, “Start the work without fasting.” This response visibly unsettled Gangopadhyay, who insisted, “I can’t be pulled around like this. I will file a case if necessary.”

Concerns about illegal construction in the area were also raised, with locals suggesting that individuals from various parties were involved. In light of this criticism, Gangopadhyay quickly left the area.

Earlier, he visited flood-affected Deriachak village in the Kolaghat block, where he met with distressed families and listened to their concerns. Despite his threats of a hunger strike to spur action, the local community was largely dismissive, asserting that work should be accomplished without resorting to such measures.

This visit followed a trip by Trinamool leader Devanshu Bhattacharya to Kolaghat, where he assessed the flood situation alongside Kunal Ghosh.

CBI Pursues New Leads in RG Kar Medical College Case, Summons Multiple Doctors

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, 22 September 2024, Calcutta:  A team of three officials from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived in Kolkata from Delhi on Sunday, September 22, 2024, intensifying the scrutiny surrounding the ongoing investigation into a high-profile case of rape and murder linked to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The situation at RG Kar has become increasingly tense as authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding the case.

The CBI officials were seen entering the hospital’s ‘Platinum Jubilee’ building, where they are expected to gather crucial information related to the investigation. Sources indicate that two forensic medicine experts from RG Kar Hospital were also summoned to the CBI office on the same day, highlighting the investigative body’s effort to piece together the details surrounding the case.

One of the central figures in this investigation is Dr. Apurba Biswas, one of the three doctors responsible for conducting the post-mortem of the victim. The CBI has summoned Dr. Biswas once again to the CGO complex for questioning, underscoring the importance of his testimony in the ongoing inquiry. He arrived at the CBI office at noon, where investigators are meticulously recording his statement.

In a related development, Chinmoy Biswas, a sub-inspector from the Tala police station, also appeared at the CGO complex following a summons from the CBI. This comes in the wake of the arrest of the station’s officer-in-charge, Abhijit Mondal, by the CBI, raising questions about the handling of the case by local law enforcement. Sub-inspector Biswas was reportedly present at the crime scene shortly after the incident was reported on the morning of August 9, working alongside the investigating officer from the police station.

These doctors—Virupaksh Biswas, Abhik Dey, and Saurabh Pal—are under scrutiny due to allegations of mishandling evidence, raising concerns about their role in the investigation.

As the CBI continues to probe deeper into the case, tensions remain high at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Shubhankar Sarkar Appointed New Bengal Pradesh Congress President

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, 22 September 2024, Calcutta :

In a significant political development, Shubhankar Sarkar has been appointed as the new President of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (WBPCC). The announcement was made by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Saturday, marking a new chapter for the Congress party in the state. Sarkar replaces veteran Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, who had held the position for several years and was known for his staunch opposition to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Sarkar’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for the Congress in West Bengal, as the party is grappling with dwindling influence and a shaky organizational structure across the state. The Congress has struggled to maintain relevance in the state in recent years, facing stiff competition from both the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Political observers believe that the moderate and less combative stance of Shubhankar Sarkar is a strategic move to reset the party’s approach in Bengal, particularly in its dealings with Mamata Banerjee’s TMC.

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, a fierce critic of Mamata Banerjee, has long been known for his confrontational politics, often targeting the Chief Minister and her policies. Chowdhury’s tenure was marked by a clear anti-TMC stance, which many felt contributed to the Congress’ growing distance from the electorate in Bengal, as many voters chose either the TMC or the BJP in state and national elections. With Shubhankar Sarkar now at the helm, there are speculations about whether the Congress is attempting to soften its stance toward the TMC in an effort to revive its fortunes in the state.

Sarkar, a moderate leader known for his diplomatic approach, could potentially signal a shift in how the Congress deals with Banerjee’s government. According to political analysts, this could be an attempt by the Congress high command to create a more cooperative environment with the TMC ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. However, the key question remains whether Shubhankar can balance his party’s interests while navigating the complex political landscape of the state.

Sarkar’s appointment comes with its own set of challenges. The Congress party in Bengal is currently facing one of its most difficult phases, with a shrinking voter base and a demoralized cadre. The party’s organizational structure is weak, with many of its former strongholds being captured by the TMC or the BJP. Sarkar’s immediate priority will be to rebuild the party from the ground up, re-energizing workers and strengthening the organizational framework ahead of the crucial 2026 Assembly polls.

The Congress’ performance in Bengal has steadily declined over the past decade, and the 2021 Assembly elections only cemented this downward trend, as the party was reduced to an almost insignificant player. In contrast, the TMC continues to dominate the state’s political landscape, while the BJP has emerged as the principal opposition. For Shubhankar Sarkar, reviving the Congress in Bengal will be an uphill battle, but his supporters believe that his moderate image and grassroots connection could help in re-establishing the party’s relevance.

The 2026 Assembly elections will be a litmus test for Shubhankar Sarkar’s leadership. The Congress faces stiff competition from both the TMC and the BJP, and it will need to carve out a clear political space for itself in this crowded arena. Sarkar’s challenge will be to bring back disillusioned Congress supporters, attract new voters, and create a message that resonates with Bengal’s diverse electorate.

Sarkar’s leadership will also be crucial in determining whether the Congress continues its historically adversarial relationship with the TMC or adopts a more pragmatic stance. With Mamata Banerjee playing a key role in national opposition politics, the Congress’ strategy in Bengal could also have implications beyond the state, especially as political parties gear up for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Reacting to Sarkar’s appointment, several Congress leaders expressed optimism. “Shubhankar has been a dedicated leader and has deep roots in Bengal politics. His appointment comes at a time when the party needs fresh energy and new ideas. We are confident that he will bring a renewed focus to the party’s activities in the state,” said a senior Congress leader.

Sarkar himself has acknowledged the enormous responsibility that comes with his new role. Speaking to party workers after his appointment, he said, “It is an honor to lead the West Bengal Congress at such a crucial time. I am aware of the challenges ahead, but I believe that together we can rebuild the party, strengthen our organization, and reconnect with the people of Bengal.”

While there is widespread anticipation around what changes Shubhankar Sarkar will bring to the party, it remains to be seen how he will navigate the complex dynamics of Bengal’s political environment and whether his leadership can reverse the Congress’ fortunes in the state.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s ‘Kanyashree’ and ‘Rupashree’ Projects Earn Special Praise from UNICEF

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | September 21, 2024 | Kolkata : The visionary projects of

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, ‘Kanyashree’ and ‘Rupashree’, have brought significant recognition to the state, earning special praise from UNICEF. At the recently concluded ‘Impact East, 2024 Conclave’, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), UNICEF’s Chief of Field Office, Manjur Hossain, lauded the far-reaching impact of these social schemes in driving positive change, particularly in the areas of women’s empowerment and social development. The event saw the participation of eminent industry leaders, including Saurabh Roy from Tata Steel, Debashis Dutta from BG Samaddar and Sons, and Prashant Kumar Hota of Jindal Steel, as well as representatives from more than fifty voluntary organizations.

Hon’ble Minister Sobhandev Chattopadhyay expressed his pride in Bengal’s achievements, stating that “The Kanyashree and Rupashree projects have added a new feather to Bengal’s crown, thanks to the visionary leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.”

The Kanyashree project, launched in 2013, was specifically designed to empower girls by encouraging them to pursue higher education and prevent child marriage. It provides financial assistance to girls from underprivileged backgrounds, aiming to delay marriages and ensure they complete their education. This initiative has garnered global acclaim, including the prestigious UNESCO Award, and is considered a model for other states and countries to emulate.

Speaking at the event, Ariane de Wagat, a UNICEF representative, remarked, “The Kanyashree project is playing a significant role in empowering women. All the work UNICEF is doing on child nutrition and growth is seeing more success because of initiatives like Kanyashree, which encourage girls to stay in school and pursue higher education. It’s also a crucial factor in preventing child marriages.” She emphasized the global importance of such programs, stating that there is a need to replicate projects like Kanyashree not just in India, but across the world.

The Rupashree project, another key initiative, provides financial support for the marriage of girls from economically disadvantaged families, ensuring that they are not forced into early marriages due to financial hardship. Together, these programs have become cornerstones of Bengal’s social welfare framework, creating a safer and more supportive environment for young women.

The impact of the Kanyashree and Rupashree schemes is clear. Official data shows a marked decline in the incidence of child marriage across Bengal, proving the effectiveness of these initiatives in addressing deep-rooted social issues. The projects have helped transform the lives of millions of girls, making Bengal a leading example of women’s empowerment in India.

UNICEF’s recognition of these projects at the conclave, along with prior acknowledgment at the Maiden’s Day event a few days ago, further solidifies the global importance of Bengal’s efforts to empower women and girls. The conclave serves as a reminder of the critical role that government initiatives can play in shaping a more inclusive and equitable society.

As Bengal continues to make strides in social development, the Kanyashree and Rupashree projects stand as a testament to the power of visionary leadership and the potential of targeted welfare programs to bring about meaningful change.

Traffic ASI Arrested in Rape Case Following Two-Month Investigation

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | September 21, 2024 | Siliguri: In a significant development, Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Amar Bir of the Bagdogra Traffic Guard was arrested on charges of rape, nearly two months after a woman lodged a formal complaint with the Matigara Police Station. The victim alleged that ASI Bir had been sexually assaulting her over an extended period, luring her with false promises of marriage and, in some instances, using his position to intimidate her.

According to sources, the accused ASI threatened the woman with police action if she exposed the abuse. Despite this, the victim courageously filed a written complaint with Matigara Police Station two months ago, detailing her traumatic experiences. After an extended investigation, the police arrested ASI Bir yesterday, marking a turning point in the case.

The accused was presented before the Siliguri Sub-Divisional Court earlier today. Authorities from Matigara Police Station have requested custody of the ASI to proceed with a thorough investigation into the allegations. The remand period is expected to be crucial for gathering additional evidence and verifying the full extent of the crimes committed.

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the local community, as ASI Amar Bir had been a traffic officer in the Bagdogra Traffic Guard for several years. Local residents and advocacy groups are closely following the case, hoping for swift justice and accountability. Fearing his arrest, he first applied for anticipatory bail in the sessions court, which rejected his appeal, and then pursued the appeal in the high court, which also rejected it.

This incident has once again highlighted the pressing issue of power dynamics and abuse within law enforcement, raising concerns about the need for greater transparency and stronger checks on those in positions of authority.
