However, a video clip of Abhishek Banerjee’s statement was posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Trinamool Congress, where the party wrote, “Abhishek Banerjee expresses concern over the situation in Bangladesh.” The post was later deleted, raising questions about the party’s stance and the potential diplomatic implications.

The issue has also stirred up domestic politics, with the opposition BJP demanding stronger action from the Indian government. BJP leader Shuvendu Adhikari weighed in, suggesting that India may need to take more decisive steps if the situation in Bangladesh worsens, even hinting at the possibility of reopening the Petrapole border. “If necessary, we will reopen the Petrapole border to protect the interests of the people and ensure that the persecuted minorities have a safe passage,” Adhikari stated, reflecting the urgency of the situation in the eyes of the opposition.

As tensions rise, questions are being raised about the relationship between Bangladesh and India, with some speculating that the Bangladeshi government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, may be gravitating towards Pakistan. The visit was attended by local councilor Bapi Ghosh, Mayor’s Council member for the Slum Department Swapan Samaddar, and several other officials, underscoring the importance of the project to the city’s urban renewal efforts.

The mayor highlighted the deep cultural and religious significance of the Ghat, saying, “The Chief Minister is deeply fond of this project. The importance of Mother’s Ghat, both in terms of religious beliefs and historical perspective, is immense. This beautification work is being carried out with great care and attention to detail, and we are confident that it will attract international tourists.”

The project, which is being executed in phases, aims to transform the area around Mother’s Ghat into a prime cultural and tourist destination. While the first phase has already been completed, the second phase has now begun with a special focus on improving the living conditions of slum dwellers in the vicinity.

In this next phase, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has outlined plans to provide new housing for approximately 300 families living around Sarada Mayer’s house in Bagbazar. Under the state government’s Banglar Bari project, new flats will be built to house these families. A total of 11 residential towers will be constructed, with four flats per floor, each spanning 400 square feet. These flats will be ready for occupancy before the Puja season of 2025.

Additionally, the area surrounding Sarada Mayer’s house, which leads up to Mother’s Ghat, will undergo beautification, with new trees planted and lighting installations added to enhance the environment. The road infrastructure will also be upgraded, contributing to a more scenic and accessible waterfront area.

The state government has allocated a total of ₹20 crore for the second phase of the project, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving both the aesthetic appeal and the quality of life for local residents.

Mayor Hakim reiterated the importance of this project, not only as a cultural landmark but also as a model for urban renewal that combines heritage preservation with modern development. “This is a step towards making Kolkata more beautiful and accessible for everyone, while ensuring that the marginalized sections of society are uplifted,” he said.

The Beautification of Mother’s Ghat project is part of a broader initiative by the West Bengal government to revitalize key historical and cultural sites in the city while providing better housing and infrastructure for the urban poor.

Chandannagar Takes Action Against Traffic Chaos Caused by Totos, Launches E-Rickshaw Counting Initiative

Chandannagar Municipal Corporation Mayor, Ram Chakraborty, acknowledged the challenges posed by the unregulated e-rickshaws. He stated, “Totos have become a serious concern in our city. The general public faces numerous difficulties, ranging from movement restrictions to traffic congestion. We also do not have any official data about how many Totos are currently operating in the city. The absence of government regulations on Totos has made it even more difficult to manage.”

To tackle the issue, Mayor Chakraborty mentioned that the municipality has taken proactive steps, collaborating with the state’s transport minister to establish clear rules and regulations for Toto operations. The process of identifying and officially registering Totos has now begun, and it is expected that these vehicles will be allowed to ply within the city only under strict guidelines. “We are setting an example for the state,” he said. “While Arambagh has already successfully completed similar efforts, Chandannagar is now taking the lead in implementing a formal process.”

The first phase of this initiative, a comprehensive counting and registration drive for e-rickshaws and Totos, started on Tuesday, November 26. The process is scheduled to continue until November 30. The municipality has set up counting camps at four designated locations throughout the city to gather data on the number of Totos in operation. On the first day of the drive, dozens of Toto drivers gathered in crowds to fill out application forms for registration.

According to Mayor Chakraborty, this drive is being conducted under the guidance of the state government’s transport department, with representatives from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) present at each camp to oversee the process. “We are working in close coordination with the RTO and municipal staff to ensure that all Totos are accounted for and that the necessary rules are implemented effectively,” he added.

This initiative is part of a larger effort by the Chandannagar Municipality to restore order to the city’s roads and ensure a smoother, safer transportation system for its residents. By regulating the e-rickshaw sector, the local authorities hope to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly in residential and school zones, and create a more organized system of transportation.
