CM Mamata Banerjee Warns Against Unrest During Cyclone and Festive Season, Calls for Heightened Security Amid Cyclone Dana’s Impact

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 25, 2024, Kolkata: As Cyclone Dana lashed the coastal districts of West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee maintained round-the-clock vigilance from the control room at Nabanna, the state secretariat, coordinating relief and monitoring potential threats overnight on Thursday. Addressing the press on Friday afternoon, Banerjee voiced concerns that the simultaneous occurrence of the festival season and a natural disaster could be exploited to incite unrest. She cautioned officials to prevent any attempts at mischief amid the prevailing challenges.

“The state is facing both a calamity and a festive season. We have reports of potential unrest, especially with Kali Puja and Jagaddhatri Puja approaching, and we cannot afford any untoward incidents,” Banerjee stated. She called on law enforcement agencies and detectives to intensify surveillance, particularly in sensitive regions, underscoring that this vigilance is crucial to ensure peace.

Earlier on Friday morning, Banerjee convened a meeting with the District Magistrates and senior administrative officials, instructing them to assess ground-level impacts of the cyclone and submit detailed reports. With Cyclone Dana’s landfall affecting various parts of South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore, Banerjee highlighted the urgency of addressing infrastructure damage, particularly as several houses have sustained cracks and other structural damage in East Midnapore.

The Chief Minister confirmed one cyclone-related fatality, revealing that the individual died due to the storm’s impact while at home. Expressing condolences, Banerjee assured the family of the deceased of government support and emphasized her administration’s commitment to the welfare of all affected.

The government’s rapid response prevented recent unrest from spreading in areas like Howrah, where isolated incidents were reported. Banerjee’s directive to the police and intelligence agencies highlights the administration’s determination to maintain stability during the festival season.

Cyclone Dana’s influence continues to be felt, with severe flooding and blocked access in several coastal districts. Banerjee reassured the public that relief operations are underway, and medical camps have been mobilized to provide immediate assistance. As the state prepares for the upcoming festivities, Banerjee’s call for vigilance reflects a determined approach to ensuring both the physical and social safety of Bengal’s residents during this critical time.

Drama Unfolds in JPC Meeting on Waqf Bill: TMC’s Kalyan Banerjee Removed After Heated Exchange, Allegations of Targeting Surface

Drama Unfolds in JPC Meeting on Waqf Bill

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 25, 2024, Kolkata: Tensions ran high at the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) meeting on the Waqf Bill on October 22, where a heated exchange led to Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee being dismissed from the committee following an outburst. In the midst of a fierce argument, Banerjee reportedly lost his temper, smashing a glass water bottle on the table in frustration. The incident, which left his hand injured, saw him leaving the room with a bandage on his hand, supported by AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi.

Witnesses report that as discussions on the Waqf Bill intensified, verbal exchanges escalated into a near-scuffle between Banerjee and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay, a former Calcutta High Court judge. Amidst the tension, a broken glass bottle lay on the table, adding to the charged atmosphere. Allegations surfaced that Banerjee had attempted to throw the bottle toward JPC Chairperson Jagdambika Pal, though Banerjee dismissed these accusations, instead pointing to what he claimed was a targeted attack against him for his strong stance on secularism.

“I am being singled out because I stand firm against communal agendas,” Banerjee commented, speaking about the incident for the first time since it occurred. “I have faced threats before, and there is even a plot to eliminate me. They can go as far as killing me for my commitment to non-communal values and secularism,” he added.

Despite being removed from the committee, Banerjee remains defiant, with BJP MPs now urging for a suspension from the Lok Sabha as well. The demand for stricter action underscores the mounting tensions between BJP and TMC representatives, especially on sensitive legislative issues like the Waqf Bill.

Banerjee, however, voiced disappointment over his treatment by Chairperson Jagdambika Pal, recalling that he had celebrated Pal’s birthday just the night before. “This lack of courtesy is disappointing. I got six stitches on my hand, and yet here I am, unfairly targeted,” he remarked.

The incident highlights the intensifying political rift within parliamentary discussions, raising questions about decorum and the challenges of maintaining bipartisan cooperation on contentious bills. The JPC is expected to issue a formal statement regarding the incident in the coming days, as Parliament braces for potential disciplinary proceedings against Banerjee.

Banerjee outlined immediate and long-term relief plans, addressing government officials from all districts on proactive measures for the coming days. Key relief initiatives include crop insurance for farmers who suffered agricultural losses and housing support for those whose homes were damaged. Additionally, medical camps will be set up wherever required to provide health support, and all relief camps will remain on standby to assist affected residents.

Reaffirming the administration’s commitment to people’s welfare, Banerjee emphasized, “Our government is dedicated to alleviating the suffering of our people. The spirit of our ‘Ma-Mati-Manush’ government is always to act swiftly to restore normalcy and support our citizens.”

As the festive season approaches, with Jagaddhatri Puja, Chhath Puja, and Kali Puja on the horizon, Banerjee instructed the police to heighten surveillance, especially around the Ganga ghats, to ensure safety and prevent any disruptions. Specific directives were given to the Chandannagar Police Commissioner in Hooghly district, the District Magistrate, and the Superintendent of Police to increase vigilance across the region.

Lastly, the Chief Minister emphasized the importance of replanting trees in storm-damaged areas to restore green cover and enhance community resilience to future disasters.

Kolkata Faces Heavy Rainfall: Authorities Work to Manage Flooding

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 25, 2024, Kolkata Kolkata has experienced a significant downpour today, with approximately 100 mm of rain recorded since the morning, well above the normal rainfall average of 20 mm. The heavy rains have caused substantial water accumulation across the city, particularly in low-lying areas, where residents are grappling with flooding conditions.

According to reports, water levels have reached about six inches in various locations, including areas around the SSKM Hospital. Mayor Firhad Hakim addressed the situation, stating, “If it doesn’t rain again, the accumulated water should recede within three to four hours.” He emphasized that 483 large pumps are currently operational across the city’s 87 pumping stations, working tirelessly to clear the water.

Despite the heavy rainfall, Hakim reassured residents that there have been no reports of fallen trees or power poles, attributing this to the city’s preparedness. “Our workers have been on duty throughout the night, focusing on water removal,” he noted. The Mayor also highlighted the resilience of the Kolkata Municipality, stating, “14 lakh of us have been distilled from over 50 years of accumulated issues.”

In a proactive move, Hakim announced the development of a new pumping station in Thanthania, named the Netaji Pumping Station, aimed at enhancing the city’s drainage capabilities. He remarked, “We conducted a comprehensive audit before the monsoon, ensuring that not a single electrocution incident occurred during the rains.”

However, not all areas are coping effectively; the Ballygung pumping station faced operational challenges, leading to stagnant water in the vicinity. Mayor Hakim acknowledged this issue and assured the public that water in affected areas would be cleared shortly.

Additionally, the Mayor expressed concerns over what he described as deprivation of resources from the central government, stating that the city is relying heavily on state funds to manage the situation. He called for greater support and resources to address the ongoing challenges posed by heavy rains.

As the city navigates through these flooding issues, residents remain hopeful for timely interventions to restore normalcy.

Cyclone ‘Dana’ Approaches: West Bengal and Odisha Brace for Impact

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 24, 2024, Kolkata: Cyclone ‘Dana’ is intensifying, with Odisha and West Bengal on high alert, preparing for potential devastation. With wartime-like emergency operations underway, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee held a press conference at Nabanna on Thursday afternoon, updating the public on the measures taken and the anticipated threats.

In addition to Odisha and West Bengal, Cyclone Dana is projected to affect Andhra Pradesh, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu, with winds expected to reach speeds of 40 km/h in several districts. Qadir, who was also a member of the Howrah Municipality representing ward number 31, was fatally attacked at around 10:30 p.m. by two unidentified assailants.

According to witnesses, the attackers approached on a motorcycle and fired multiple rounds at Qadir from point-blank range. The Yuva Trinamool leader was struck by 2-3 bullets before the assailants fled the scene. Despite being rushed to the trauma care center at SSKM Hospital, Qadir was declared dead on arrival.

Local law enforcement, including officials from the Shivpur police station, Howrah City Police, and detectives, promptly arrived at the scene to investigate. While the exact motive behind the shooting remains unclear, initial police reports suggest that the attack could be linked to an old rivalry.

This killing adds to a growing number of violent incidents targeting TMC leaders in West Bengal over the past few months. The investigation is ongoing, as authorities work to determine the culprits and the reasons behind this brutal attack.

Coastal Communities Brace for Cyclone Dana as Precautions Intensify

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 24, 2024, Hooghly: As Cyclone Dana approaches, coastal areas along the Bay of Bengal in West Bengal and Odisha are experiencing unprecedented calm as residents heed warnings and evacuate. The Shunshan Ferry Ghat has ceased operations, with the ticket counter closed and the entrance gate locked. Following directives from the state government, local authorities have ordered the suspension of all ferry services for safety reasons.

Starting at 5 PM yesterday, ferry operations from Uttarpara and Guptipara were halted. Despite the closures, some uninformed passengers attempted to access the ferry services, only to find the gates locked. Rainfall has commenced this morning, driven by strong winds from the cyclone, which have darkened the skies and prompted most residents to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary. The usually bustling roads near the ghat are nearly deserted, and many local jute shops remain shuttered.

While train services continue to operate normally today, Eastern Railway has announced that beginning tomorrow morning, in anticipation of Cyclone Dana’s peak impact, 68 trains in the Howrah division will be canceled. This includes all local trains on the Howrah-Arambagh branch. Authorities are prioritizing passenger safety as the storm looms, urging the public to stay informed and prepared.

Supreme Court Intervenes to Protect Trees Amid Kolkata Metro Expansion Controversy

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 23, 2024, Kolkata :

In a significant ruling regarding the Kolkata Metro Rail expansion, the Supreme Court has intervened to halt the planned felling of 943 trees, emphasizing the need for environmental protection. A bench comprising Justice KV Viswanathan and Justice PK Misrar ordered that “no fresh felling of trees for Kolkata Metro Rail works” can occur without approval from the Union Ministry of Environment.

This decision comes in the wake of a legal challenge initiated by senior lawyer Jaideep Gupta on June 20, which contested a previous verdict by a division bench of the Calcutta High Court. The Supreme Court’s ruling on Wednesday not only stayed the High Court’s verdict but also granted permission for the metro expansion to continue, provided it adheres to environmental regulations.

During the proceedings, Gupta highlighted the extensive tree removal planned for a 10-kilometer extension of the metro, arguing that a significant number of trees were being cut without the necessary permissions. He expressed concerns about the environmental damage that would result from the loss of these trees, particularly in the Maidan area, which is often referred to as the “lungs of the city.” The court had previously ruled on September 13 that no trees could be cut in the Maidan area for metro work, reiterating the importance of preserving this vital green space.

The issue of tree felling for the metro expansion has sparked considerable public concern, leading the organization People United for Better Living in Kolkata to file a Public Interest Litigation in 2023, aimed at safeguarding the area’s trees. It is feared that up to 700 trees could be cut down for the metro work stretching from Mominpur to Dharmatala, further amplifying worries about environmental degradation.

In defense of the project’s environmental considerations, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that while some trees were uprooted, they were being relocated to other sites, with 94 trees already replanted. However, the Supreme Court’s latest ruling reinforces the need for stringent oversight regarding any further tree removal linked to the metro expansion, ensuring that environmental concerns are prioritized as the project progresses.

As the situation develops, stakeholders are encouraged to closely monitor the implications of this ruling on both the metro expansion and the environment of Kolkata.

Cyclone Dana Approaches: Rainfall Begins as Authorities Mobilize for Safety

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 23, 2024, Kolkata :

As Cyclone Dana makes its presence felt, the skies over West Bengal have turned ominously heavy since Wednesday morning, bringing with it the onset of rain across the region. The deep depression in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a cyclonic storm early Wednesday and is currently charting a course toward the Odisha coast.

According to Delhi’s Mausam Bhavan, the cyclone is moving northwest at a speed of 15 km per hour. As of now, Paradwip in Odisha is approximately 520 km away, while Sagardwip in West Bengal is 600 km distant, and Khepupara in Bangladesh is about 610 km from the storm’s center.

Cyclone Dana is expected to make landfall near Odisha’s Dhamara port between late Thursday night and early Friday morning, with wind speeds projected to exceed 100 to 110 km/h, possibly reaching up to 120 km/h.

In preparation for the cyclone’s impact, local administrations in East Medinipur and South 24 Parganas have implemented precautionary measures. Public announcements are being made using microphones to alert coastal residents, particularly in high-risk areas such as Mandarmani, Tajpur, Digha, and Shankarpur, where the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been deployed.

Coastal regions including Sagardwip, Namkhana, Patharpratima, and Bakkhali have been under strict surveillance, with a ban on sea access instituted in Gangasagar, Fraserganj, and Bakkhali to ensure public safety. While the full extent of Cyclone Dana’s impact remains uncertain, authorities are on high alert and have mobilized all necessary resources to mitigate risks.

As the storm approaches, residents are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety protocols issued by local authorities. The situation will be closely monitored as the cyclone progresses, with updates to be provided as necessary.

Among the canceled local services are multiple routes, including Sealdah to Lakshikantpur, Diamond Harbour, Baruipur, Sonarpur, and Barasat. Additional cancellations are anticipated as the situation unfolds, with station announcements set to inform travelers of any further disruptions. Deepak Nigam, the Sealdah Divisional Railway Manager, confirmed that 160 local trains have been canceled due to safety concerns, with some branches also suspending operations beginning Thursday evening.

The Digha-Visakhapatnam Express is also set to be canceled on Friday.

The Odisha administration has ordered the evacuation of all hotels and lodgings along the coast by 5 PM on Wednesday, creating challenges for tourists trying to return home amidst the cancellation of several trains.

As the region braces for the cyclone’s impact, both travelers and local residents are urged to stay informed and prioritize safety in these uncertain times.

Tragedy Strikes at Debra Super Specialty Hospital: Woman Dies After Childbirth, Family Alleges Medical Negligence

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 22, 2024, West Medinipur : Tensions flared at Debra Super Specialty Hospital after a 23-year-old woman, Mamni Sardar Singh, tragically died following complications from childbirth. The young mother was admitted to the hospital in labor on Monday evening, and while she successfully gave birth to a baby girl, she began experiencing severe bleeding shortly after the delivery. Despite the medical team’s efforts, Mamni passed away in the early hours of Tuesday, around 2:00 a.m., leaving her grieving family devastated.

According to hospital sources, the patient was taken to the operating theater (OT) for delivery when her labor pains intensified. Dr. Atanu Samant, the doctor on duty, performed the operation. However, shortly after the delivery, Mamni experienced excessive bleeding, which could not be controlled, leading to her untimely death.

The grieving family has accused the hospital staff, particularly Dr. Samant and the attending nurses, of negligence, claiming that Mamni’s death was the result of improper treatment. Tension erupted on the hospital premises early Tuesday morning as news of the incident spread. Family members and local residents gathered, demanding accountability for what they believe was a preventable death.

The patient’s family has since filed a formal complaint with the hospital superintendent, urging a thorough investigation and calling for strict action against the doctor and nurses involved. “We lost her because of negligence. This is unacceptable,” a family member said. They have called for the responsible parties to be held accountable for the tragedy.

In response to the incident, local BJP leader Kashinath Bose sharply criticized the hospital, accusing it of failing to provide adequate care. “Debra Super Specialty Hospital is notorious for referring patients to the district hospital instead of treating them properly. This negligence has now cost a young woman her life,” Bose stated. He called for immediate punitive action against those responsible for the death, emphasizing the need for systemic improvements in the hospital’s care standards.

The incident has stirred significant unrest in the local community, with calls for better healthcare services in the area and heightened scrutiny over the hospital’s practices. Police were deployed to the hospital on Tuesday morning to prevent any escalation, ensuring the situation remained under control.

Meanwhile, hospital authorities have assured that an internal investigation will be conducted to determine the exact cause of Mamni’s death and to address the family’s allegations. Local residents, however, remain skeptical, with many questioning the hospital’s capabilities to handle critical cases.

As the family mourns the loss of Mamni Sardar Singh, the focus now shifts to ensuring that justice is served and that such tragedies are prevented in the future. The incident has also reignited discussions about the state of healthcare in rural areas, with increasing pressure on authorities to improve facilities and staff accountability at hospitals like Debra Super Specialty.

Supreme Court Rebukes ED for Overreach in Chhattisgarh Corruption Case Arrest

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 22, 2024, Kolkata: In a scathing reprimand, the Supreme Court of India strongly criticized the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for its handling of the arrest of former IAS officer Anil Tuteja in connection with the Chhattisgarh excise corruption case. The court raised serious concerns about the agency’s conduct, specifically questioning the legality of the arrest, and accused the ED of overreach in its investigative actions.

The case stems from allegations of large-scale excise corruption amounting to ₹2,100 crore during the tenure of the Congress-led government in Chhattisgarh between 2019 and 2022. The ED, tasked with probing financial crimes, initiated its investigation into the matter. In April 2024, Anil Tuteja, a high-ranking bureaucrat at the time, was arrested as part of the probe.

During a hearing on Monday, the Supreme Court expressed its displeasure over the manner in which the ED conducted the arrest. Referring to Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which safeguards the right to life and personal liberty, the court reminded the agency that no individual’s fundamental rights should be compromised. “There is something called Article 21,” the court firmly stated. “It guarantees a citizen’s right to life and liberty, and the central agency cannot strip someone of these basic rights.”

The defense counsel representing Tuteja narrated a series of events that highlighted procedural concerns. According to the lawyer, Tuteja had appeared at the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) office in Bengal for questioning on April 20. ED officers, present during the interrogation, issued a summons to Tuteja which was set to expire by noon that day. Given that the period had already lapsed, Tuteja refused to accept the notice. Following this, the ED issued a fresh summons instructing him to report to their office later in the evening at 5:30 p.m.

After enduring a day of questioning at the ACB office, Tuteja was reportedly taken to the ED office where he was interrogated throughout the night. He was arrested in the early hours of April 21, sparking outrage from both Tuteja’s legal team and now, the Supreme Court.

The apex court harshly questioned the need for the ED to conduct its inquiry simultaneously with the ongoing investigation by the ACB. “Why did the ED feel the need to intervene during the ACB’s questioning? How can the ED issue a notice in the middle of another agency’s inquiry? Such haste is not even seen in cases of terrorism or criminal litigation,” the court remarked, calling the ED’s actions a “serious breach.”

In response to the court’s blistering critique, the ED maintained that Tuteja had willingly visited their office and was not forced into custody. However, Tuteja’s lawyer countered this claim, insisting that the arrest was illegal and demanded his client’s immediate bail.

The Supreme Court’s reprimand underscores a growing scrutiny of investigative agencies’ methods, especially in cases involving high-profile individuals. The court has reserved its final judgment on the bail plea, signaling that the agency’s actions will continue to be under a legal microscope.

The hearing has sparked widespread attention, with many viewing the court’s stance as a reaffirmation of the judiciary’s role in protecting individual rights against perceived misuse of power by investigative bodies.
