Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 10, 2024, Hooghly : In a remarkable display of communal harmony, the Imam Bazar in Hooghly has become a focal point for unity during the Durga Puja festivities. Built over two decades under the initiative of Danbir Haji Mohammad Mohsin, this stunning architectural marvel stands as a testament to the inclusive spirit of the region, welcoming people from all communities.
Adjacent to the Imam Bazar, on the serene banks of the Ganges, the local Imam Bazar organizes a vibrant public Durga Puja, where members of both Hindu and Muslim communities come together to celebrate. This year, as in years past, the festival has seen participants working side by side, from fetching the idol from the potter’s house to organizing various rituals and festivities.
Mohammad Ramzan, a local resident, shared his enthusiasm, saying, “We do puja together. We are very happy. I bring the idol of Goddess Durga in my own car. During our Muharram tazia, our Hindu brothers join us. We live side by side, so we don’t see any difference.”
Soumitra Singh, another community member, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the Durga Puja they organize is a true collaboration between Hindu and Muslim residents. “Though the place is called Imam Bazar, the Durga Puja we celebrate is a joint effort. Ramzan brings the idol without asking for a penny. Our youth may be fewer, but the spirit of cooperation is strong. We enjoy the festivities together—eating prasad, sharing sacrifices, and celebrating both Eid and Muharram in unison,” he explained.
Highlighting the unique atmosphere of peace in the Imam Bazar area, Soumitra noted that despite the proximity of two distinct communities, there have been no reports of untoward incidents. “We pray to the Mother to maintain harmony. Festivals like Durga Puja are for everyone, and we celebrate them together,” he said.
As the festivities unfold, the Imam Bazar stands as a shining example of how cultural and religious differences can be bridged through shared celebrations, fostering an environment of mutual respect and understanding. In Hooghly, the spirit of togetherness prevails, reminding all that unity in diversity is not just an ideal, but a lived reality.
