Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 31, 2024, West Midnapore : A family of four was buried under debris when their mud house collapsed suddenly late Wednesday night in Ramchandrapur village, Debra Block No. 3, in West Midnapore’s Satyapur area. The tragic incident occurred around midnight, with the family rescued and rushed to Debra Super Specialty Hospital. Two of the family members, an 11-year-old girl and a 50-year-old woman, remain in critical condition.
The family patriarch, Moitap Ali, his wife, and two young grandchildren were asleep when the structure of their mud house gave way, trapping them under heavy debris. Ali’s son, Sek Amar Ali, who lives nearby, heard a loud crash in the dead of night and raced to the scene. He described the chaotic moments that followed.
“I suddenly heard a loud noise and ran out to see our house collapsing before my eyes,” Amar recounted. “My wife and I rushed into the crumbling house without a second thought. My father was buried completely under the rubble. We managed to rescue him, my mother, and the children before quickly taking them to the hospital.”
With the help of neighbors, the family was transported to Debra Hospital, where medical staff administered first aid. While most family members were discharged after treatment, 11-year-old Nargis Parveen and 50-year-old Manuara Bibi were admitted to the Debra Super Specialty Hospital due to their critical condition.
The accident has left the family without a roof over their heads, compounding their hardships. Local authorities and community members are reportedly stepping in to offer support in the aftermath of this disaster, which has left the family vulnerable and shaken.
As the family awaits updates on the health of the critically injured, the incident underscores the risks faced by families residing in structurally unsound mud houses, particularly in rural areas. The community is rallying around the family, and local leaders are pressing for improved housing safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
