Air India Flight Escapes Major Mishap After Bird Strike in Pune; Return Flight Canceled, Passengers Assisted

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 21, 2025, Kolkata :
An Air India flight (AI2470) operating from Delhi to Pune encountered a bird strike on Friday, prompting emergency safety procedures and the subsequent cancellation of its return leg to the capital. The incident occurred mid-air, but thanks to the pilot’s prompt response and skillful handling, the aircraft landed safely at Pune Airport without any injuries reported among the passengers.

In an official statement, Air India confirmed that the bird strike was detected only after the aircraft had landed in Pune. The airline immediately grounded the aircraft and initiated a detailed engineering inspection to assess potential damage and ensure all safety protocols were met before the aircraft is cleared for service.

Due to the incident, AI2470’s return journey from Pune to Delhi was canceled, causing disruption to travel plans and stranding many passengers at Pune Airport. Acknowledging the inconvenience, Air India announced a series of remedial measures, including hotel accommodation for affected travelers, full refunds for those opting to cancel their trips, and free rescheduling options for passengers wishing to alter their travel dates.

The airline added, “We are arranging alternative flights to help passengers reach Delhi at the earliest. The safety of our passengers and crew is our top priority, and we appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience.”

Experts in aviation safety have noted that while bird strikes are more common during takeoff and landing, they can also occur mid-flight and pose a serious risk to aircraft engines and critical systems. Timely decision-making and strict adherence to safety protocols are essential, and Air India’s swift response in this case has drawn praise from aviation observers and passengers alike.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers bird strikes pose to aviation, underscoring the ongoing need for strict monitoring of flight paths, especially near airports, and for aircraft to be maintained in readiness for emergency situations.

In a separate development, Air India also announced a temporary reduction in international operations as part of a network rationalisation initiative from June 21 to July 15. The airline will suspend three international routes during this period:

  • Delhi–Nairobi (4 flights/week)

  • Amritsar–London Gatwick (3 flights/week)

  • Goa (Mopa)–London Gatwick (3 flights/week)

Additionally, frequencies will be reduced on 18 other international routes, affecting services to destinations in North America, Europe, East Asia, and Australia. Major routes impacted include Delhi–Toronto, Delhi–Vancouver, Delhi–San Francisco, Delhi–Chicago, and Delhi–Washington D.C.

Air India has stated that affected passengers will be fully compensated, with the options of refunds, free rescheduling, or re-accommodation on alternate flights being made available.

These operational adjustments come amid ongoing fleet maintenance, safety reviews, and performance optimisations as the airline continues to modernize and restructure its global network.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Holds Emergency Meeting as South Bengal Braces for Severe Flooding

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | Kolkata | June 21, 2025 :
With the monsoon now firmly established and heavy rainfall already triggering alarm, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee convened an emergency high-level meeting at Nabanna on Friday to assess and coordinate immediate flood response efforts in South Bengal. The region, vulnerable due to a chronically strained drainage system and the rising water levels in major rivers, is bracing for what officials warn could be the worst monsoon flooding since 1978.

The Chief Minister, acutely aware of the mounting risk, spoke directly with administrative officials in the affected districts, using the phone of Chief Secretary Manoj Pant during the meeting. She issued strict instructions for real-time monitoring and rapid mobilization of relief measures across multiple districts. Responsibilities have been distributed among senior ministers, with each assigned to specific flood-prone areas to oversee preparedness and response on the ground.

According to Nabanna sources, Minister Pulak Roy will supervise operations in Amta and Udaynarayanpur in Howrah, Manas Bhuiyan will monitor developments in West Midnapore, Firhad Hakim is tasked with overseeing Goghat in Hooghly, and Malay Ghatak has been assigned to the Bankura-Purulia belt. The government is also coordinating with local administrations to ensure swift responses where needed.

In parallel, a state-level briefing was held by the Chief Secretary with District Magistrates a day prior, underlining the seriousness of the situation. Relief materials—including tarpaulin sheets, dry rations, clean clothes, essential medicines, and drinking water—have already been dispatched to district stockpiles, allowing for immediate distribution once floodwaters begin affecting civilian areas.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is currently on high alert and has been stationed strategically across vulnerable zones to assist in evacuation and relief operations. Over 50 rescue camps have been set up, providing shelter, food, water, and basic medical care for displaced residents.

Despite these measures, tensions have resurfaced between the state and central governments. Irrigation Minister Manas Bhuiyan expressed sharp criticism of the Centre, particularly over delays and inaction in desilting operations by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). While the DVC has historically been blamed for contributing to downstream flooding due to poor water management, state officials now emphasize that the crisis cannot be resolved by scapegoating a single entity. Instead, they are pushing for long-term structural improvements and better inter-state coordination, especially with Jharkhand, where upstream releases significantly impact South Bengal’s floodplain.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has offered a small window of relief, predicting a temporary dip in rainfall intensity over the next two days. However, officials are not taking any chances, citing past experiences where a brief lull was quickly followed by torrential downpours. Preparations remain aggressive and proactive, especially in low-lying and river-adjacent zones.

As flood response operations scale up, public attention is also turning toward the distribution of relief materials, an area historically marred by allegations of nepotism and corruption. Civil society groups and local watchdogs are calling for transparency and accountability in relief logistics this time around.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made it clear that the state cannot afford complacency. With lessons learned from past disasters and this year’s monsoon already exceeding expectations, the administration is under pressure to protect lives, property, and public trust in the days ahead.

Millions Celebrate 11th International Yoga Day Across India with PM Modi Leading from Visakhapatnam

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 20, 2025, Kolkata :

In an awe-inspiring display of unity, health, and spiritual connection, millions of people across India gathered on June 21 to celebrate the 11th International Day of Yoga. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leading the nationwide festivities, conducted a mass yoga demonstration in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, where thousands of participants gathered at RK Beach.

Dressed in traditional white, PM Modi emphasized the global significance of yoga, especially in today’s world, which faces growing tensions and unrest. “Yoga is the pause button that humanity needs to breathe, to balance, to become whole again,” he said. Highlighting this year’s theme, ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health,’ he reminded the crowd of the interconnectedness of all life on Earth, from the soil that nurtures us to the rivers and animals that sustain our ecosystem. He also called for a “Yoga for Humanity 2.0,” where inner peace becomes a global priority.

In Manmathpur, a special yoga event organized by the Bharat Sevashram Sangha at the Pranab Mandir took place, highlighting the importance of yoga not just for physical well-being but as a means of spiritual growth. Revered Gautam Maharaj of the Mahishadal branch explained, “Yoga is not just a physical practice, it is a path of deep spiritual practice. It harmonizes our body, mind, and soul, leading to inner peace and self-discipline.”

In addition, the Bharat Sevashram Sangha celebrated Yoga Day in multiple locations, following the principles of the organization’s founder, Acharya Srimat Swami Pranabanandaji Maharaj, to promote Indian culture and philosophy. Participants performed yoga under strict adherence to government protocols, underscoring the event’s significance in cultivating a healthy, balanced life.

In Andhra Pradesh, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, alongside Deputy CM Pawan Kalyan, joined the celebrations, marking a record turnout. Naidu announced that the state set a remarkable 23 global records, including two Guinness World Records and 21 World Book of Records titles. The most notable achievement was the participation of 3.03 lakh people performing yoga together at a single location, setting a world record. Another Guinness World Record was created by 22,122 tribal students who performed 108 Surya Namaskars for 108 minutes.

Across the country, yoga’s transformative power was evident. From the frosty expanse of Siachen Glacier to the vast decks of Indian Navy ships anchored off Visakhapatnam, the armed forces demonstrated their commitment to discipline and strength through synchronized yoga. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, leading a celebration in Udhampur, remarked, “Yoga, once confined to saints and seers, is now practiced globally. From New York’s Times Square to the lawns near the Eiffel Tower, is it not a miracle?” He also underscored yoga’s role as India’s rising soft power.

In Delhi, 3,400 participants, including diplomats, NCC cadets, and students, gathered at the Cariappa Parade Ground for a grand yoga session. Lt. Gen. N.S. Raja Subramani, Vice Chief of the Army Staff, led the event, while Indian Air Force personnel formed a symbolic display of ‘OP SINDOOR’ as they performed asanas at Subroto Park.

President Droupadi Murmu, speaking at an event in Dehradun, described yoga as a “shared legacy of mankind,” emphasizing that it transcends religion and community. Similarly, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, alongside other dignitaries, participated in yoga sessions across the country, reinforcing yoga’s global reach.

Many state leaders took the opportunity to launch significant initiatives. In Delhi, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta performed yoga by the Yamuna River, while UP CM Yogi Adityanath led celebrations in Gorakhpur. In Haryana, CM Nayab Singh Saini, joined by yoga guru Ramdev, introduced a five-minute daily yoga break in all government offices and proposed a uniform yoga curriculum across universities and colleges in the state.

Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami introduced India’s first Yoga Policy, aiming to transform the state into a global wellness hub. Goa CM Pramod Sawant encouraged schools to dedicate 15 minutes daily to yoga, while in Bihar, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan joined a special session at Raj Bhavan’s Darbar Hall.

The celebration also saw over 3,000 persons with disabilities performing yoga in Hyderabad, sending a powerful message of inclusivity. Additionally, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) organized sessions at 81 heritage sites, including the Konark Sun Temple, Adalaj Ki Vav, and Jantar Mantar, further integrating India’s rich cultural heritage with the yoga movement.

The global recognition of International Yoga Day, proclaimed by the United Nations in December 2014, is now a widespread movement with India’s initiative earning the backing of a record 175 countries. Over the years, this celebration has grown beyond a mere physical exercise event, symbolizing a global call for peace, wellness, and a deeper connection to the self.

As International Yoga Day 2025 concluded, the collective spirit of mindfulness, health, and unity resonated from India’s cities, rural landscapes, and historic sites, reaffirming yoga’s status as both a gift of India to the world and a tool for universal well-being.

State Minister Inspects Flood-Hit Paschim Medinipur, Criticizes Centre Over Inaction on Durgapur Barrage Silt Removal

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | June 20, 2025 | Kolkata:  Irrigation Minister Manas Bhuiyan, continuing his tour of flood-affected regions, visited Paschim Medinipur following his earlier inspections in Durgapur and Bankura. During his visit, he conducted a ground assessment of the inundated areas and directed the local administration to provide all necessary support to the affected residents. The minister emphasized the urgent need for proactive disaster management and accused the central government of prolonged inaction regarding critical infrastructural issues.

Speaking to journalists on-site, Bhuiyan attributed the declining water-holding capacity of the Durgapur Barrage to years of silt accumulation. He stated that despite the state government’s repeated appeals to the Centre for desilting assistance, no meaningful response had been received. “The Centre has not extended any support since 2015 for repairing the lock gates of the Durgapur Barrage. The Chief Minister is funding these works from the state’s own resources,” he said, expressing frustration. “Over the last thirteen years, several formal requests have been made to increase the barrage’s capacity by removing silt, but we have only received empty promises.”

On Friday morning, the minister inspected the recently renovated road atop the Durgapur Barrage and again voiced strong criticism of the Centre’s alleged neglect. He revealed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had personally written to both the Ministry of Jal Shakti and the Prime Minister, urging action, but to no avail. Bhuiyan added that plans were being discussed to construct a new bridge adjacent to the existing one and pledged to escalate the proposal to higher authorities for consideration.

Discussing the status of the road renovation work, the minister acknowledged delays caused by rainfall and noted that rubber seals—critical for completing the barrage road—were yet to be installed and are being procured from Hyderabad. The road repair had necessitated halting the water flow for about one and a half months. Now, water is being cautiously released in small volumes to stabilize water levels in Maithan, Panchet, and Durgapur Barrages.

The recent spell of heavy rainfall in districts including Bankura, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, and parts of Jharkhand has intensified water flow in the Damodar River, raising concerns over potential overflow. Minister Bhuiyan stressed that a formal request had been submitted to ensure the state government is notified in advance before any water is released, to better manage the situation. He confirmed that irrigation department officials are closely monitoring developments.

Accompanying the minister on this inspection were key officials and political representatives, including Paschim Medinipur District Magistrate Khurshid Ali Qadri, Superintendent of Police Dhritimaan Sarkar, District President Pratibha Maiti, District Vice President Ajit Maiti, Ghatal Sub-Divisional Officer Suman Biswas, Garbeta MLA Uttara Singh Hazra, and Shalbani MLA and State Minister Shrikant Mahato.

BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay Airlifted to Delhi AIIMS in Critical Condition Amid Severe Illness

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews | June 20, 2025 | Kolkata : Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Member of Parliament from Tamluk and former judge of the Calcutta High Court, has been airlifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi following a sharp deterioration in his health. Gangopadhyay, 63, was undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit of a private hospital in South Kolkata for several days, where he remained in a critically unstable condition. According to hospital officials, he has been placed on low-flow oxygen support as his condition continues to remain extremely serious.

The MP is battling acute pancreatitis and gastrointestinal sepsis, a combination doctors have described as highly dangerous. Medical experts explain that acute pancreatitis typically causes intense abdominal pain, which may radiate to the chest or back, while gastrointestinal sepsis aggressively compromises the body’s immune system, potentially leading to widespread infection and multi-organ failure. Sources indicate that the infection has entered his bloodstream through the esophagus, placing his kidneys, heart, and brain under significant risk. The next 72 hours are considered crucial, as medical staff strive to control the progression of the sepsis.

Gangopadhyay was transferred to AIIMS via air ambulance on Thursday afternoon, accompanied by a team of experienced doctors. The decision was taken in consultation with his family and party leadership to ensure he receives the most advanced care possible. The Prime Minister’s Office reportedly reached out to the family soon after his hospital admission, assuring them of full support, and senior BJP leaders including Opposition Leader Suvendu Adhikari and former state president Dilip Ghosh have visited him personally.

The sudden health crisis has sent waves of concern through the state’s political landscape. Gangopadhyay, known for his straightforward and assertive judicial pronouncements during his tenure on the Calcutta High Court bench, stepped down ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections to contest on a BJP ticket. His transition from judiciary to politics drew widespread attention, especially for his stance in high-profile cases related to administrative transparency and education.

As he continues to fight for his life, the people of Tamluk, his parliamentary constituency, as well as supporters across West Bengal, remain on edge. His family, party colleagues, and well-wishers await further updates with hope and anxiety. Medical professionals emphasize that gastrointestinal sepsis, although sometimes starting with mild symptoms like stomach discomfort, can rapidly escalate into a life-threatening condition if not promptly treated. Symptoms may include high fever, vomiting, plummeting blood pressure, and difficulty breathing as the infection spreads across various bodily systems.

Currently, the BJP’s central leadership is closely monitoring the situation, and the entire state is united in prayer for the MP’s recovery.

Nine Dead, Including Child, as Speeding Car Rams Dhaba in Pune Amid Heavy Rain News Report:

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | June 19, 2025 | Pune, Maharashtra : A devastating road accident in Pune, Maharashtra claimed nine lives, including that of a six-year-old child, after a speeding car lost control and rammed into a group of people outside a roadside eatery. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, June 18, at approximately 6:45 pm, on the Jejuri-Morgaon road in the Pune district during a spell of heavy rainfall.

According to local police and national media reports, the accident happened outside a dhaba where a pick-up vehicle had parked. The owner of the eatery and several workers were unloading a refrigerator from the vehicle when a Swift Dzire, reportedly carrying six occupants and moving at a dangerously high speed, veered off the road and smashed into the scene.

The force of the impact crushed nine people, including five who were on the ground assisting with the unloading operation and four from inside the car. Among the dead were the hotel owner, the pick-up driver, three workers helping him, a child, and a woman traveling in the car. Three more individuals sustained injuries and were rushed to a local hospital in Jejuri. One of the injured later succumbed to injuries, bringing the death toll to nine. Two others, including a woman and her daughter from the car, are still receiving treatment.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Tanaji Barade confirmed that the deceased included those working at the hotel and passengers of the ill-fated car. He stated that the vehicle had suddenly lost control in the rain and struck the parked pick-up and the group standing nearby. Superintendent of Police Sandeep Singh Gill added that a full investigation is underway to determine whether reckless driving or mechanical failure led to the accident.

Eyewitnesses reported that the car appeared to skid before it ploughed into the victims, adding that the area was experiencing a torrential downpour at the time. Locals rushed to the site upon hearing the loud crash and immediately informed the police. Emergency responders arrived quickly and carried out rescue operations, pulling victims from under the wreckage and transporting them to the hospital.

The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community, and officials have urged motorists to exercise caution while driving during monsoon conditions. Police continue to examine surveillance footage and conduct technical assessments of the vehicle as part of the ongoing probe.

Mamata Banerjee Condemns Centre’s June 20 ‘Bangla Day’ Observance, Slams BJP’s ‘Mockery of Democracy’

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | June 19, 2025 | Kolkata :  West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government over two major political developments—its decision to observe June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitution Murder Day) and the Centre-endorsed plan to observe June 20 as Bangla Divas (Bengal Day) across the country, with particular emphasis on its celebration at the Raj Bhavan in Uttar Pradesh.

Banerjee took strong exception to the letter issued by the Raj Bhavan of Uttar Pradesh, which announced that June 20 would be officially observed as Bangla Day not just in that state, but across several others. The announcement has triggered a fresh political storm in West Bengal, where the state government had earlier passed legislation to designate Poila Boishakh (1st Baishakh)—the Bengali New Year—as Bangla Pratishtha Divas (Bengal Foundation Day).

“Why should another state decide our foundation day? Why should Uttar Pradesh or the BJP dictate Bengal’s cultural and historical observances?” Banerjee asked in a press conference, accusing the Centre of undermining state rights and cultural autonomy. “Our state has a specific day, recognised by law. That is Poila Baishakh. Why are they trying to impose June 20 instead? Will they also decide when we celebrate Rabindra Jayanti, Nazrul Jayanti, or what we wear and eat?” she asked sharply.

The choice of Uttar Pradesh—a politically significant state governed by the BJP—as the centrepiece for this observance has added to Banerjee’s fury. She viewed it as a calculated move by the Centre to push a homogenised political narrative, using a non-Bengali state to redefine Bengal’s identity.

“Celebrating Bangla Day from Uttar Pradesh is a direct insult to the people of Bengal. This is not unity—it is a forced narrative, a distortion,” she said. “Poila Boishakh is rooted in our history, our language, and our people. What authority does the Raj Bhavan in UP have to rename our day?”

Simultaneously, Banerjee lambasted the Centre’s plans to observe June 25 as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, calling it a “mockery of democracy.” She accused the BJP of hypocrisy, claiming it was the very party undermining the Constitution while pretending to honour it. “Those who don’t respect the Constitution are now talking about upholding it. It’s a mockery,” she stated, referring to the Centre’s alleged attacks on federalism and civil liberties.

Taking aim at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Banerjee said, “Who is actually running the country? Modi is always travelling and Shah handles everything else. He might as well declare Shah the Prime Minister.” She also questioned the BJP’s democratic credentials, citing its role in the collapse of elected governments in Maharashtra and Bihar as clear violations of constitutional values.

The chief minister further criticised the Centre’s handling of internal dissent, alleged manipulation of institutions, and refusal to respond to the Trinamool Congress’s questions on the recent Pahalgam attack. “When anything happens in Bengal, 155 teams are sent. But what happens during Gujarat riots or when a BJP MP insults women after a terror attack? No answers,” she said.

Banerjee also reignited criticism of the 2016 demonetisation, claiming that over 140 people died and branding November 8 as “Economy Destruction Day.”

With Uttar Pradesh’s Raj Bhavan now positioned as a national stage for redefining Bengal’s cultural markers, Banerjee’s statements reflect a fierce resistance to what she calls the Centre’s repeated attempts to “erase regional identity under the garb of national unity.”

Her remarks have once again highlighted the growing friction between the West Bengal government and the BJP-led Centre, particularly over cultural autonomy, federalism, and political control. As preparations for the 2026 Assembly elections gather momentum, these tensions are likely to fuel further confrontations.

All Eyes on Suvendu Adhikari as BJP Gears Up for 2026 Bengal Assembly Polls Amid Intra-Party Tensions

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | June 19, 2025 | Kolkata :
The political battleground in West Bengal is once again abuzz as preparations quietly begin for the 2026 Assembly elections. In what many are calling Bengal’s ‘political World Cup’, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has begun laying strategic groundwork to consolidate its position as the principal opposition and mount a formidable challenge to the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), led by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

While the BJP is yet to officially declare its chief ministerial candidate, the name of Suvendu Adhikari has emerged prominently in the internal discourse. Though West Bengal BJP president and newly appointed Union minister Sukanta Majumdar is also considered a contender, it is Adhikari who appears to be leading the race. A senior BJP leader has reportedly said, “There is no alternative to Suvendu Adhikari,” indicating a strong leaning within the party’s central leadership toward projecting him as the face of the party in the upcoming elections.

Adhikari’s political journey is as striking as it is strategic. Once a key figure within the Trinamool Congress, he switched allegiance to the BJP ahead of the 2021 Assembly elections. His biggest political coup came when he defeated Mamata Banerjee herself in the high-stakes Nandigram constituency by a margin of 1,956 votes. This victory not only cemented his position within the BJP but also led to his appointment as the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly.

Over the past four years, Adhikari has consistently positioned himself as a vocal critic of the TMC government. From raising concerns about corruption and administrative irregularities to highlighting law-and-order issues, he has spearheaded several campaigns against the state administration. His political experience within the TMC, coupled with his combative stance, has made him a strong contender in the eyes of many within the BJP.

However, the state BJP unit is not without internal friction. A notable power struggle is underway between Suvendu Adhikari and Sukanta Majumdar. This rivalry came to the fore during Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to West Bengal on May 31 and June 1. While Adhikari’s camp saw Shah’s public praise—stating that “whenever Adhikari stands up, Didi feels scared”—as a major endorsement, Majumdar’s supporters highlighted that he was the only leader to accompany Shah on the flight to Kolkata, interpreting it as a sign of deeper proximity to the central leadership.

The jostling for influence has created a visible rift within the state BJP. Despite the high-profile visit by Shah and the announcement of new organisational initiatives such as Tiranga Yatras and the promotion of Operation Sindoor, the party continues to suffer from a lack of unity and leadership clarity. The state unit has been headless for over a year since Majumdar’s elevation to the Union Cabinet after winning the Balurghat seat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. No successor has been named, leaving the party directionless at a critical juncture.

Compounding these issues is the BJP’s waning electoral performance in the state. After securing 18 Lok Sabha seats in 2019, the party managed to win only 12 in 2024. The tally of 77 assembly seats in 2021 has since fallen to under 70, and the party has failed to win any by-elections since. Key grassroots structures like booth committees remain incomplete, a factor widely seen as contributing to the BJP’s poll setbacks.

Despite the internal discord, the central leadership appears determined to rally the state unit. While intra-party rivalries have taken centre stage for now, the party’s broader objective remains unambiguous: to present a united and strong opposition to Mamata Banerjee in 2026. With Suvendu Adhikari increasingly emerging as the central figure in the party’s plans, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the BJP can overcome its internal challenges and mount a serious electoral offensive in West Bengal.

Two Dead, Three Injured in Landslide on Kedarnath Yatra Route in Uttarakhand

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | June 19, 2025 | Kolkata : A tragic incident struck the Kedarnath Yatra route in Uttarakhand on Wednesday, June 18, when a sudden landslide near Jungle Chatti in Rudraprayag district claimed the lives of two pilgrims and left three others injured. The incident occurred at around 11:20 AM, when large rocks and debris fell from the hillside, hitting pilgrims and porters ferrying them along the trekking path.

The deceased have been identified as Nitin Kumar and Chandrashekhar, both from Doda district in Jammu. They were labourers carrying a woman pilgrim on a palanquin—referred to locally as a dandi or kandi—when the landslide hit, causing them to fall into a gorge. State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Commandant Arpan Yaduvanshi confirmed that the woman sustained only minor injuries and was safely rescued, along with others caught in the debris.

Three others sustained serious injuries in the incident. They have been identified as Sandeep Kumar and Nitin Manhas from Doda, and Akash Chitriya from Bhavnagar, Gujarat. All injured individuals were promptly rescued and admitted to a nearby hospital in Gaurikund for treatment.

Upon receiving reports of the landslide, local police stationed at the Jungle Chatti outpost, along with the district disaster management force and the SDRF, reached the site and launched immediate rescue operations. Rudraprayag Superintendent of Police Akshay Prahlad Konde confirmed that those who had fallen into the gorge were safely recovered and that the evacuation of remaining pilgrims was carried out in a secure and organized manner.

The affected area, Jungle Chatti, is known for frequent landslides, especially during the monsoon season. In 2024, a portion of the Gaurikund-Kedarnath trekking route at this same location had been washed away due to heavy rains.

Despite the latest incident, Rudraprayag police confirmed that the trekking route remains open and the Kedarnath Yatra is continuing without disruption. However, an advisory has been issued urging pilgrims to remain cautious while trekking, especially beyond Gaurikund later in the day. Authorities have also advised travellers to monitor weather updates closely, as rainfall is typically reported along the route during afternoon hours.

All safety and rescue measures are being actively enforced, and the administration remains vigilant to ensure the wellbeing of pilgrims undertaking the yatra.

Five Killed, 18 Injured After Pick-Up Van Overturns in Bihar’s Saran District Due to Tyre Burst

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 16, 2025, Patna :
In a tragic road accident early Monday morning in Bihar’s Saran district, five people, including three women and a child, lost their lives and at least 18 others sustained injuries after a pick-up van overturned following a tyre burst. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. near the Nayagaon locality on National Highway-19, under the Nayagaon police station area, as confirmed by Saran Senior Superintendent of Police Kumar Ashish.

The vehicle, reportedly travelling at high speed, was carrying several passengers and bags of corn from Dighwara to Hajipur. As the van approached the Bajitpur four-lane stretch, one of its front tyres suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle overturned, resulting in a horrific scene with victims trapped and corn scattered across the road.

Local residents and passersby rushed to the aid of the victims. The police, upon receiving an emergency alert via Dial 112, promptly reached the site and, with help from locals, transported the injured to Sonpur Sub-divisional Hospital. After initial treatment, all injured individuals were referred to Sadar Hospital in Hajipur for further medical care. Two of the injured are reported to be in critical condition.

Among the deceased are Anju Devi (48), Radhika Devi (50), Sonu Kumar (23), Rajlaxmi Kumari (15), and Shivam Kumar (7). Four of the victims died at the scene, while another succumbed to injuries during treatment at the hospital. The identities of the remaining injured are currently being verified by authorities.

The police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the accident. The driver of the pick-up van, who also sustained injuries, will be questioned once his condition stabilizes. Authorities have sent the deceased for post-mortem and are overseeing the treatment of the injured in coordination with the local administration.

The community remains in shock following the tragic incident, as officials work to piece together the circumstances leading to the crash and ensure appropriate assistance for the victims’ families.

Digital Census 2026 Brings Opportunities and Security Concerns in the Era of Data Sensitivity

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 16, 2025, Delhi : As India prepares for its first fully digital census, scheduled to begin in 2026, both opportunity and apprehension mark this landmark shift. The transition to digital tools and real-time data uploading reflects Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader Digital India initiative, but it also brings to the forefront heightened concerns over data privacy, accuracy, and the potential for misuse in an increasingly cyber-sensitive era.

A gazette notification for the upcoming census will be officially published today, setting in motion an expansive and technologically intensive exercise. The process will be conducted in two phases, starting in 2026 and concluding by February 28, 2027. The final reviewed report is expected to be released after March 2027.

This will be India’s first census to be conducted entirely through mobile applications, with enumerators and officers across all states uploading data directly to a central server housed in the Census Building on Man Singh Road, New Delhi. Each citizen’s data—including religion, age, caste, and household details—will be entered using coded formats. For instance, numeric codes will represent religious affiliations, such as ‘1’ for Hindu, ‘2’ for Muslim, and so forth.

While this digital approach promises efficiency and speed, it also poses complex challenges. The central concern revolves around ensuring the confidentiality of sensitive personal data in a time when cyber fraud is rampant and personal information is often sold or leaked in underground digital markets. Despite legal safeguards stating the confidentiality of census data, the possibility of data breaches remains a matter of serious concern for the Centre.

In response, Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened a high-level meeting on Sunday with Census Commissioner Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan at his residence on Krishna Menon Marg. Another follow-up meeting is scheduled with the Union Cabinet Secretary on Tuesday. These meetings aim to reinforce safeguards that ensure data integrity and protection throughout the census process.

Special emphasis is being placed on data verification. Mechanisms will be implemented to detect anomalies—such as improbable age gaps between family members or mismatched religious or caste information. If any such inconsistencies are found during central-level reviews, the relevant enumerators will be dispatched again for field-level verification. Situations such as foster parentage, religious conversion, or household reconstitution will be carefully evaluated to uphold the accuracy of the data.

A particularly sensitive aspect of this census is the inclusion of ‘others’ under caste categorization, encompassing a broad array of communities beyond Scheduled Castes and Tribes. While Scheduled Castes include only Hindus, Sikhs, and Buddhists, Scheduled Tribes can belong to any religion. In a diverse country like India, many individuals from these ‘other’ communities may not possess caste certificates. The census will rely on verbal declarations from the head of the household in such cases—raising further questions about verification and potential discrepancies.

With the census data sheet currently under development, key questions remain about how to handle non-disclosure, inaccurate reporting, or intentional data omission. The central objective remains twofold: to capture a comprehensive, inclusive, and truthful demographic profile of the country, and to ensure that Digital India’s most ambitious data initiative does not compromise the privacy and dignity of its citizens.

The 2026 Census is not only a logistical and technological undertaking but also a test of governance, trust, and digital responsibility in the world’s largest democracy.

Protest at Assembly Demands Reinstatement of 32,965 Teachers Dismissed by High Court Verdict

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 16, 2025, Kolkata :
A major protest took place today near the West Bengal Legislative Assembly as thousands rallied to demand immediate reinstatement of 32,965 teachers and school assistants who lost their jobs following a landmark verdict delivered by the Calcutta High Court on April 6, 2026. The ruling, which impacted candidates appointed under the Primary and School Assistant (Vidyalayasathi) recruitment process, has left thousands unemployed, many of whom had been serving in primary education roles after clearing the 2009 Teacher Eligibility Test (TET).

The affected educators, most of whom had secured jobs after a long and competitive selection process, are now facing acute financial and mental hardship. Reports of rising stress-related health issues and even suicides have surfaced among the dismissed personnel, prompting urgent calls for intervention.

To draw attention to their plight and press for a solution, the group of dismissed teachers and education workers staged a peaceful campaign near the Vidhan Sabha. Their primary demand was the immediate reinstatement of all 32,965 affected individuals and a permanent resolution to the issue through legislative or executive action.

The protest was supported by members of several civil society organizations, including We Are The Common People, People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Bengal Students’ Unite, and the All India Human Rights Organisation, under the banner of the West Bengal Democratic Civil Society.

Subhajit Duttagupta, a prominent member of the West Bengal Democratic Citizens’ Forum and editor of We Are The Common People, addressed the gathering. He called for swift governmental action to safeguard the jobs of eligible candidates from the 2016 School Service Commission (SSC) panel and demanded the withdrawal of the controversial notification and gazette issued by the SSC regarding re-examination procedures. Duttagupta also insisted on the immediate public release of approximately 22 lakh OMR mirror image copies, relating to eligible and awaiting candidates — including those not called for verification.

He further urged the state government to convene an emergency session of the Assembly to resolve this escalating crisis. While not all member organizations of the West Bengal Democratic Citizens’ Forum could attend the event on short notice, Duttagupta confirmed that the forum stands in full solidarity with the movement and will continue to support future campaigns for justice.

The demonstrators have appealed directly to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, seeking her urgent intervention in the matter. They emphasized the importance of preserving the livelihoods of qualified educators and the stability of the state’s public education system.

As the movement gathers momentum, the affected teachers and their supporters remain hopeful that the government will respond with empathy and a prompt solution, acknowledging both the legal complexity and the human cost of the verdict.

State Extends Relief to Khidirpur Market Fire Victims; CM Promises Rebuilding and Support

Baby Chakraborty | KalimNews | June 13, 2025 | Kolkata  :  he state government has assured full support to those affected by the devastating fire that broke out in the Orphanganj Market of Khidirpur in the early hours of Sunday. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the site directly from the Assembly on Monday and pledged comprehensive assistance to the affected traders. She announced that a new market will be constructed at the government’s expense, with no financial burden placed on the traders. The new market, to be built by the municipal corporation, will incorporate modern and scientific infrastructure, including proper firefighting systems to prevent future incidents.

In the interim, temporary arrangements will be made to ensure traders can continue their livelihood until the new market is operational. The state will provide financial relief of Rs 1 lakh to traders who have lost their entire shops and Rs 50,000 to those whose shops were partially damaged. A thorough investigation is being initiated to assess the extent of damage, identify the affected traders, and compile a detailed report. To maintain safety and order, the Chief Minister directed that barricades be erected around the fire-affected zone.

The fire reportedly broke out at around 1:00 a.m. on Sunday in the Orphanganj Market, which houses warehouses storing oil and butter—materials known to accelerate fire spread. Witnesses described the flames engulfing one shop and warehouse after another in rapid succession. The fire brigade was promptly alerted, but local traders have raised concerns over delayed action, alleging that initial emergency calls received no immediate response and that attempts to contact the local Watganj police station went unanswered.

According to the traders, a call to the national emergency helpline (100) was made, after which approximately twenty fire engines arrived at the scene an hour and a half later. They also claimed that the firefighting team initially lacked sufficient water to tackle the blaze, and that it was only after water was sourced from the Ganga that the fire could be brought under control.

Despite the challenges and the devastation caused, the state government’s prompt commitment to rebuilding and rehabilitation has brought a measure of reassurance to the affected community. An official damage report is expected soon, following which compensation disbursements and rebuilding efforts will be rolled out in full force.

TMC Leadership Urges Unity in Birbhum, Warns Leaders Against Intra-Party Conflict Ahead of 2026 Elections

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews | June 15, 2025 | Kolkata : The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has issued a strong directive to senior leaders Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh to put aside personal differences and work cohesively to strengthen the party’s organizational base in Birbhum ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. At a high-level party meeting held on Saturday in Bhawanipore, Kolkata, the state leadership emphasized that any internal discord affecting electoral performance will not be tolerated and could result in consequences for those responsible.

State party president Subrata Bakshi chaired the meeting, which included the presence of key leaders such as Firhad Hakim, Aroop Biswas, and Asish Banerjee. Members of the Birbhum and North Kolkata core committees, along with district presidents and chairpersons, were summoned to assess preparedness for the upcoming July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally and to address organizational matters in the politically sensitive Birbhum district.

According to party sources, a separate closed-door discussion was held with both Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh prior to the main session. During this conversation, the two leaders were explicitly warned against continuing their public feud. The party leadership conveyed that mutual cooperation is essential for the success of TMC in the forthcoming elections and that any public disagreements, especially those involving derogatory language, would not be condoned.

This firm stance follows recent controversies involving Anubrata Mondal, who was caught in a viral audio clip allegedly using abusive language during a phone call with a police officer. Within hours of the incident gaining traction on social media, the party directed Mondal to issue a public apology, which he complied with. Law enforcement has since registered a criminal case against him under non-bailable charges.

The party also expressed concern over statements made in the media by both leaders and urged them to refrain from making any comments that could reflect poorly on the organization. Senior leaders such as Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay and Firhad Hakim reiterated the party’s commitment to maintaining internal discipline and contrasted TMC’s swift action against such behavior with what they described as inaction by other political parties in similar situations.

Amid ongoing efforts to revamp the party’s structure in Birbhum, the Trinamool Congress recently dissolved the post of district president, forming instead a seven-member core committee to manage district affairs. This organizational reshuffle is part of a broader strategy to decentralize leadership and avoid factional dominance in key regions.

Saturday’s developments underscore the TMC leadership’s intent to present a unified front and avoid any perception of internal division as the state heads toward a crucial electoral contest. The emphasis on discipline, cooperation, and accountability signals a clear message from the party’s top brass that electoral success hinges on collective effort and cohesion.

Trinamool Rallies Behind Mamata for Martyrs’ Day Amid Internal Ripples: Mamata Sole Face of July 21 Rally

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 15, 2025, Kolkata :
Sudeep Banerjee has informed that this time the poster of the July 21 rally will have only the face of Supremo Mamata Banerjee. There will be no picture of the All India General Secretary.

The Trinamool Congress has called for preparations for the July 21 rally on Saturday. In response to questions from journalists, MP Sudeep Banerjee said, “The poster of the July 21 program has been given on a pen drive from the Camac Street office. There is only Mamata Banerjee’s picture there.” At the same time, he said, “Abhishek himself said that he was not in the July 21 program. That is why only the Chief Minister’s picture will be there. Mamata’s picture was also in the Netaji Indoor meeting. The Chief Minister has repeatedly said that she is the last word of the organization. She will lead the party for another ten years.”

Did the leader want to emphasize once again that Mamata alone has the final say in the party?

The Trinamool Congress has decided that only the image of party supremo Mamata Banerjee will feature on all official posters for the July 21 Martyrs’ Day rally, as national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has opted out, stating he wasn’t part of the original movement in 1993.

The decision of Banerjee, Mamata’s nephew and widely regarded as the party’s second-in-command, to opt out of the poster has raised eyebrows across political circles, sparking speculation about internal party dynamics.

Senior TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay confirmed the move on Saturday following a meeting held at the party’s Bhabanipur office here. “The poster for the July 21 rally contains only Mamata Banerjee’s photograph. Abhishek Banerjee himself said his photo should not be there as he was not part of the original movement in 1993,” Bandyopadhyay, the party’s leader in Lok Sabha, told reporters.

According to party leaders, Banerjee entered politics as a member of the TMC in 2011 and was eventually made the president of Trinamool Yuva, which was later merged with Trinamool Youth Congress.

The announcement comes amid a history of intra-party debates over the prominence of leaders in posters. The controversy dates back to November 2023 when only Mamata’s image featured in the background of a major rally at Netaji Indoor Stadium. At that time, party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh had publicly questioned the omission of Abhishek’s image, stirring internal debates.

Earlier this year, the issue flared up again over a TMC calendar distributed among various party offices. Abhishek’s image was subsequently omitted from major party events, including the February rally at Netaji Indoor Stadium.

“This time, we aim for a record-breaking turnout. We will set a benchmark for how a single party can organise such a massive rally in the heart of a city,” Bandyopadhyay said, adding that party leaders, including state president Subrata Bakshi, have issued clear directives to district units to ensure maximum mobilisation.

The July 21 ‘Martyrs Day’ rally is observed annually by TMC to commemorate the killing of 13 people in police firing in 1993, when Mamata Banerjee, then a Youth Congress leader, had launched a march to the secretariat, demanding that voters’ card be made the sole document to allow people to exercise their franchise.

Amid preparations for the rally, another political subplot unfolded on Saturday as two heavyweight leaders from Birbhum, Anubrata Mondal and Kajal Sheikh, were asked to attend a closed-door meeting with top TMC leaders. Both leaders have been embroiled in a factional feud in the politically volatile Birbhum district. While Kajal Sheikh arrived earlier, Anubrata — popularly known as ‘Kesto’ — joined the meeting shortly before 1 PM.

India’s Political Journey: From Idealism to Power Struggles, the People Remain the Ultimate Judge

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, June 15, 2025, Kolkata : The history of Indian politics is a saga of selfless sacrifice, strategic conflicts, and evolving democratic aspirations. From the fierce anti-colonial struggle to the formation of an independent nation, it was the relentless spirit of countless revolutionaries that laid the foundation for a sovereign India. The trauma of Partition, soaked in the blood of millions, marked the beginning of India’s complex political journey. At the heart of that formative phase lay the first great internal contention—within the Indian National Congress—between Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru over the post of the Prime Minister. Though Patel secured the majority support within the Congress Working Committee, Mahatma Gandhi intervened and eventually endorsed Nehru, who went on to become independent India’s first Prime Minister. This moment, debated and documented in contemporary publications, has often been cited as an early compromise on democratic process, though it laid the groundwork for what would become a long and dynamic parliamentary democracy.

Pandit Nehru’s vision of India was deeply rooted in democracy, secularism, and socialism. His leadership was marked by a commitment to planned development and positioning India on the global stage with dignity. His tenure symbolized the use of political power as a means to nation-building rather than personal gain. After his demise, Indira Gandhi emerged as a dominant force in Indian politics, known for her decisiveness and authority. However, the imposition of Emergency in 1975 remains a contentious chapter, widely criticized for undermining democratic institutions and civil liberties. With the later involvement of Rajiv Gandhi, followed by Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, the Congress party’s leadership remained closely tied to the Gandhi family. Supporters viewed it as a continuation of a historical legacy, while critics denounced it as dynastic politics.

The essence of the Prime Minister’s post in India has never been merely administrative. It has symbolized ideological commitments and moral accountability to the people. The political shift in the 1990s, marked by the decline of single-party dominance, brought coalition governments to the fore. Leaders like V.P. Singh, Chandrashekhar, H.D. Deve Gowda, and I.K. Gujral briefly held the post before Atal Bihari Vajpayee provided a semblance of continuity. This era was defined by compromise and negotiation, where policy often gave way to political expediency.

In 2014, a significant transformation occurred as Narendra Modi rose to power with a clear majority. His tenure has been characterized by assertive governance, extensive public engagement, and a strong individual-centric leadership style. Opinions remain divided: some interpret this period as one of democratic centralization, while others hail it as a necessary push towards decisive governance and development.

Throughout these shifting phases, the Indian political landscape has been shaped by an enduring struggle between ideals and power, service and ambition, leadership and ego. The office of the Prime Minister has changed hands and approaches, but its core significance—as a responsibility towards the nation—remains unchanged. Leaders who truly served the public have earned a lasting place in the hearts of citizens. In contrast, those who treated power as a personal privilege have often faded into historical obscurity.

Today, as new generations rise and engage with politics, there is a growing need to view leadership not as a means of dominance but as a vehicle for societal transformation. A robust democracy depends not only on elections but on transparency, ethics, and a commitment to the welfare of all citizens. As India navigates its contemporary political challenges, the public’s hope remains fixed on leaders who are humane, principled, and deeply rooted in democratic values. The “game of thrones” continues, but the verdict always lies with the people.

Tragic Murder in Maharashtra: Newlywed Woman Allegedly Kills Husband After Strained Relationship

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews,

Kolkata, June 15, 2025  : The nation is still reeling from a shocking series of murders that have dominated headlines, and another chilling case has now emerged from Singli district in Maharashtra. A newlywed woman is accused of brutally murdering her husband just 15 days after their marriage. The victim, identified as 53-year-old Anil Lokhande, was allegedly hacked to death by his 27-year-old wife, Radhika, using an axe.

Anil Lokhande, who had previously lost his first wife to cancer, had recently married Radhika, and the couple seemed to start their new life full of hope. However, what appeared to be a fresh beginning quickly turned into tragedy. Police investigations have revealed that Anil began pressuring Radhika for physical relations almost immediately after their marriage, a demand that reportedly frustrated and upset her. The significant age difference between the two, with Anil being nearly twice Radhika’s age, further strained their relationship.
According to the police, the couple got married on May 23 in Maharashtra’s Sangli district.
On Tuesday night, the two fought aggressively, following which the victim, Anil Lokhande, went to sleep around midnight.
In a fit of rage, the woman, Radhika Lokhande, picked up an axe and hit her husband on the head, officials said. He died on the spot.
Minutes later, Radhika called her cousin and informed about the crime she committed.

Radhika, feeling increasingly uncomfortable and distressed by her husband’s repeated requests, reached a breaking point. On the night of Wednesday, June 13, she allegedly took an axe while Anil was asleep beside her and struck him multiple times. The assault was so brutal that Anil died on the spot.

The neighbors alerted the authorities early the next morning after they heard screams, and police officers swiftly arrived at the scene. Upon investigation, they arrested Radhika and initiated questioning. A case has been filed against her under several sections of the Indian Penal Code.

The police arrested Radhika on Wednesday and sent her to a two-day police custody, officials said. A case has been registered against her under Section 103 (1) of the BNS (murder).

Preliminary investigation indicates family discord to be the reason behind the murder.

However, officials are conducting further investigation, they said. This disturbing incident has sparked widespread discussions on various issues, including the psychological impact of marital pressures, the significance of mutual consent, and the importance of mental health in intimate relationships. Many are questioning the extreme violence exhibited and the underlying causes that led to such a horrific act. The case has stirred a broader con
