Swapan Banerjee, Mamata’s Brother, Loses Bengal Olympic Association Election to Opposition Candidate Chandan Roy Chowdhury

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 1, 2024, Kolkata:

In a dramatic turn of events, Swapan Banerjee, also known as Babun, the 52-year-old brother of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata  Banerjee, lost his bid for the presidency of the Bengal Olympic Association (BOA) in a major electoral upset. Babun, who secured just 20 votes in the contest, was decisively defeated by opposition candidate Chandan Roy Chowdhury, who garnered 45 votes.

This election outcome has stirred significant political and sporting circles, especially as Babun, a prominent figure in the Bengal sports scene, faced off against a rival from within the same extended family. In a twist of irony, Chandan Roy Chowdhury, the winner, is also a part of Mamata’s family, as he is closely aligned with her uncle, Ajit Banerjee (Sasthi), who had previously served as the president of the BOA.

The Bengal Olympic Association elections have always been a fiercely contested affair, but this time, the stakes were particularly high due to the involvement of Mamata Banerjee’s family members. Babun’s candidacy was seen as a challenge to his own sister, the Chief Minister, as well as to Babun’s elder brother Ajit, who had been a significant figure in Bengal’s sports administration.

In the lead-up to the election, there were rumors that Babun might join the BJP, a move that reportedly led Mamata to distance herself from him. This created a rift within the family, and many of Mamata’s close allies within the BOA made it clear that Babun would not be allowed to succeed. Sports Minister Arup Biswas, along with key members of Mamata’s inner circle, worked to ensure Babun’s defeat, a strategy that eventually proved successful.
Four years ago, the election to the BOA presidency had seen a similar rivalry between Babun and Chandan Roy Chowdhury, who was supported by the faction aligned with Ajit Banerjee. In that contest, Babun had narrowly won, defeating Roy Chowdhury by a slim margin. This time, however, the political landscape had shifted dramatically.

Before the elections, Babun had publicly accused his brother, Ajit Banerjee, of conspiring against him in the BOA elections, though Ajit did not directly contest the position himself. Ajit Banerjee served as the election officer, and Babun questioned his impartiality, claiming bias in the electoral process. This accusation added fuel to the already intense rivalry, with both sides sparring over the integrity of the election.

Babun had long been a dominant figure in Bengal’s sporting arena, having served as the secretary of the Bengal Olympic Association in 2016 after narrowly defeating Chandan Roy Chowdhury. His involvement in various sports, including football, hockey, and boxing, as well as his leadership roles in workers’ unions at several private hospitals in Kolkata, had cemented his reputation as a key player in the state’s sporting and political circles.

However, this election result marks a significant shift in the balance of power within the Bengal Olympic Association and highlights the growing political divides within Mamata Banerjee’s own family. With Babun’s defeat, the influence of his rival, Chandan Roy Chowdhury, and the faction aligned with Mamata’s uncle Ajit Banerjee, appears to be on the rise.

As the dust settles, the ramifications of this family feud within the Bengal Olympic Association will undoubtedly continue to unfold, shaping both the political and sporting future of West Bengal in the years to come.

Seven Convicted in Chinsurah Murder Case Transferred Under Heavy Security Following Death Sentences

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 1, 2024, Hooghly:

In a high-security operation today, seven criminals, including the notorious Vishal Das, were moved from Hooghly Jail to Burdwan Jail following their conviction in the high-profile Chinsurah murder case. On Thursday, the fast-track court of Chinsurah sentenced Vishal Das and his six accomplices to death for their involvement in the brutal murder of local youth Bishnu Mal.

The chilling crime, which took place four years ago, was motivated by a love triangle. Bishnu Mal, a young man from Chinsurah, was tragically murdered, sparking an extensive investigation that eventually led to the arrest of the seven accused, including Vishal Das.

Following the sentencing, the Chinsurah Court’s ruling was hailed as a landmark decision. Chandannagar Police Commissioner Amit P. Javalgi, speaking at a press conference at the Chinsurah Police Lines, described the verdict as “historic” and praised the efforts of the investigative team. “This conviction is a result of diligent investigation, and we are proud of the work done by investigating officer Tamal Mohanty and his team,” Javalgi said. “Everyone involved in the investigation will be rewarded for their commitment.”

As per jail sources, the seven convicted criminals were transferred from the Hooghly District Correctional Facility to the Burdwan Central Correctional Facility, which is known for its enhanced security measures. This transfer, they explained, was made to ensure greater safety due to the high-profile nature of the case and the severity of the sentences.

The transfer of the convicts to a higher-security facility signals the gravity of the case and the government’s commitment to ensuring that justice is upheld. The death sentence has also sparked discussions about the effectiveness of the judicial system in tackling violent crimes.

Abhishek Banerjee Grills Union Minister Over Lack of Records on Post-Retirement Appointments of Judges

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, December 1, 2024, Kolkata: Trinamool Congress All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee has once again raised pointed questions that left Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal struggling to provide clear answers. On Friday, during a session in Parliament, Banerjee questioned the Union Law Ministry about the post-retirement appointments of judges from various courts, including the Supreme Court. Specifically, he sought detailed information on whether these appointments were made in government or private positions and how such decisions were being recorded.

In response, Union Minister of State for the Law Ministry, Arjun Ram Meghwal, admitted that the central government does not maintain any records on the matter. Meghwal further stated that both the central and state governments had the discretion to appoint retired judges as needed, citing the decentralization policy as the basis for these appointments. However, he acknowledged that the government did not have detailed information or a centralized database on the specific positions these retired judges had taken up.

Banerjee’s inquiry highlighted concerns over transparency and the potential for conflicts of interest, urging the government to provide clarity on the issue. Despite the Minister’s assertions, the lack of detailed records raised eyebrows, with critics questioning the oversight and accountability of such appointments.

The exchange marks another instance of Abhishek Banerjee challenging the Union government over issues of governance and transparency. His continued scrutiny of judicial appointments and the broader functioning of the legal system suggests a growing opposition effort to hold the government to account on these critical matters.

Indrani Rice Revolutionizes Agriculture in East Midnapur: High-Yield Variety Promises Boost for Farmers”

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 29, 2024, East Midnapur, West Bengal — A breakthrough in rice cultivation is transforming farming in East Midnapur, as local farmers experience significant success with a new, high-yielding rice variety known as Indrani NP 7061. Developed by the agricultural research institute Nuziveedu Seeds Limited, this new variety is set to address the growing concerns over decreasing rice production in West Bengal and broader agricultural decline in the region.

Agricultural experts attribute the region’s dwindling rice yields to a combination of climate change and frequent pest infestations, with overall agricultural production in West Bengal taking a hit in recent years. However, Indrani rice promises to be a game-changer, offering a solution to these pressing challenges. With its exceptional disease resistance, Indrani rice requires less pesticide application and is less vulnerable to insect attacks, making it an attractive choice for farmers struggling with crop losses.

Farmers in Krishnapur village in Potashpur, East Midnapur, have already reported promising results from cultivating Indrani. The variety is particularly resilient in flood-prone areas, where fields can remain submerged for days without causing significant damage to the plants. Its longer stem also makes harvesting easier, while the sturdy grains ensure a high-quality, consistent yield.

Experts from Nuziveedu Seeds Limited emphasize that Indrani rice is tailored for a variety of soil types and climate conditions, allowing farmers to adapt more easily to the challenges posed by changing weather patterns. The high disease resistance and consistent yield of Indrani also make it an economically viable option for farmers, who have seen their livelihoods suffer from unpredictable weather and pest attacks.

In an effort to further promote this innovative rice variety, a series of celebrity-driven mega shows were organized in Sarsa village (Birbarpur) and Krishnapur village. The events featured performances by comedian Maku and renowned Bolpur artist Uttam Das Baul. Uttam Das Baul even composed and performed a song celebrating the success of Indrani rice, while comedian Maku entertained farmers with humorous anecdotes that also highlighted the economic benefits of the new rice variety.

“The key advantage of Indrani rice is that it ripens uniformly and all the grains are of the same size and length, which significantly eases the harvesting process,” said Maku during his performance. “This means less labor and higher efficiency for farmers, ultimately leading to greater profits.”

Local authorities are hopeful that Indrani rice will not only help to revive the region’s agricultural sector but also improve the economic stability of the farming community in East Midnapur. As farmers adopt this high-yield variety, they expect to see a rapid increase in both crop production and income, offering a sustainable solution to the challenges facing West Bengal’s agriculture.

As the success of Indrani rice continues to spread, it could serve as a model for other areas in the state and beyond, offering a much-needed boost to the agricultural economy in the face of climate change and environmental stress.

Protests Erupt at Dankuni Toll Plaza Over Alleged Corruption by Trinamool Union Leaders

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 28, 2024, Hooghly: Tensions flared at the Dankuni Toll Plaza in Hooghly district as workers of the Trinamool Workers’ Union staged protests against two of their leaders, Nishar Ali Mallick and Nitai Dey, accusing them of embezzling crores of rupees and mistreating workers.

The situation drew the attention of the local police, who intervened to restore order.

Allegations of Corruption and Exploitation
The protestors leveled serious allegations against the two leaders:

Nishar Ali Mallick is accused of siphoning off union funds by leasing a car under his son’s name to the Dankuni Toll Plaza for ₹63,000 per month.

The car is reportedly used by a local MLA, which has further fueled the anger of workers who view this as a misuse of organizational resources for personal gain.
Nitai Dey, on the other hand, faces allegations of threatening workers with dismissal and exploiting union funds for personal enrichment. Protestors claimed that Dey has been “torturing” them by leveraging his position to suppress dissent.
Protests Demand Action
The agitated workers gathered at the toll plaza, demanding the immediate removal of both leaders and a thorough investigation into their activities. Chants against corruption and exploitation echoed in the area, disrupting operations briefly until police intervention.
The protestors accused the two leaders of betraying the principles of the workers’ union and using their positions for “dirty looting” instead of addressing the needs and welfare of the workers.
“We will not tolerate this corruption. The funds belong to the workers, not their families,” said one of the protestors.

Police Step In to Restore Order
As the protests grew intense, local law enforcement arrived at the scene to manage the crowd and prevent any escalation of violence.

The police successfully brought the situation under control but have not commented on whether an official complaint was lodged against the accused leaders.

Reactions from Stakeholders
While workers remain adamant about their demands for a leadership overhaul, the accused leaders have not yet issued any public statements regarding the allegations.

The incident has also put the Trinamool Congress (TMC) under scrutiny, with political opponents using the episode to target the ruling party for failing to curb corruption within its ranks.
Local MLA associations and higher authorities within the TMC are reportedly monitoring the situation closely. Party insiders hinted that an internal inquiry may be initiated to address the concerns raised by workers, though no official confirmation has been provided.

Call for Accountability

The episode at Dankuni Toll Plaza is the latest in a string of controversies surrounding workers’ unions in the region. The protestors have warned of continued agitation if swift action is not taken against the accused leaders.
The situation highlights broader issues of accountability and transparency within labor unions affiliated with political parties. With workers openly challenging their leadership, the incident could lead to wider implications for the union’s credibility and operations in Hooghly.

Conclusion

The protest at Dankuni Toll Plaza has brought to light allegations of corruption and worker exploitation that have simmered for months. As the workers demand justice, all eyes are now on the Trinamool Congress to address the grievances swiftly and transparently. Whether this incident triggers meaningful reform or adds to the political turmoil in the state remains to be seen.

Chinsurah Murder Case: Court Sentences 7 to Death in Gruesome Killing of Toto Driver Bishnu Mal

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 28, 2024, Hooghly :  In a historic and chilling verdict, the Chinsurah District Headquarters Court has sentenced seven individuals to death and another to seven years in prison for the brutal murder of Bishnu Mal, a young Toto driver from Raibede, Chinsurah. This verdict brings closure to a harrowing case that has haunted the community for four years.

The case revolved around the gruesome killing and dismemberment of Bishnu Mal, who was abducted on October 11, 2020, by a gang led by notorious criminal Vishal Das. Bishnu’s body was cut into six pieces, which were later discovered in plastic bags at various locations. This heinous crime not only shocked Chinsurah but also drew attention to the growing menace of gang violence in the region.
Details of the Crime
According to police investigations, Bishnu Mal was abducted from in front of his house by Vishal Das and his gang. He was taken to a house in the Chapdani area, where he was murdered and his body was dismembered.

The police launched an intensive investigation and tracked Vishal Das to Jibantala in South 24 Parganas, where he was apprehended after a dramatic shootout that left three police officers injured. Vishal’s arrest eventually led to the capture of eight other gang members implicated in the crime.

The Trial and Sentencing
The four-year-long trial culminated in a landmark judgment on November 28, 2024. The court convicted nine individuals of Bishnu Mal’s murder on November 25 and reserved the sentencing for today. The verdict is as follows:

Death Penalty:

Vishal Das (gang leader), Rajkumar Pramanik, Ratan Bepari, Vinod Das, Biplob Biswas, Ramakrishna Mandal, Rathin Singh.

Seven-Year Imprisonment:

Mantu Ghosh.

Another accused, Sheikh Mintu, had turned state witness and was released earlier.
The Criminal History of Vishal Das
Vishal Das, described as one of the most dangerous criminals in Hooghly, has a long history of murder, extortion, and racketeering. His rise in the criminal world began years ago when he allegedly orchestrated the killing of Toton Biswas’s grandfather, establishing his dominance in the region. Vishal’s notoriety grew further after a gang war in the Balagarh area, where he and others were severely injured in a shootout.

After serving time in jail for his involvement in various crimes, Vishal returned to the criminal underworld, continuing his reign of terror until his arrest for Bishnu Mal’s murder.

A Victory for Justice
This verdict is being hailed as a major win for justice in Hooghly, as it not only punishes those responsible for Bishnu Mal’s murder but also sends a strong message against organized crime. Family members of the victim expressed relief and gratitude, with Bishnu’s mother stating, “We waited for years for this day. We hope no family has to endure what we went through.”
Community and Legal Response
The brutal nature of the crime has sparked debates about law enforcement’s role in preventing such atrocities. Legal experts and activists are calling for stricter measures to dismantle criminal networks in the state. The court’s decision has been widely praised for its swiftness and decisiveness in delivering justice in a high-profile case.
Conclusion
The sentencing marks the end of a dark chapter in Chinsurah’s history while underlining the need for vigilance against the growing threat of gang violence. For the people of Hooghly, it is both a moment of justice and a stark reminder of the dangers that unchecked criminality can bring.

Mamata Wants to Kill Me: BJP’s Arjun Singh Makes Explosive Allegations Amid Corruption Probe

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 28, 2024, Kolkata: In a dramatic turn of events, BJP leader Arjun Singh has alleged that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is conspiring to kill him. The statement came after Singh appeared at Bhavani Bhawan today for questioning by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with alleged corruption during his tenure as chairman of Bhatpara Municipality.

The BJP leader, who has been at the center of multiple political switches between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and BJP, has once again found himself embroiled in controversy. Singh was grilled for over three hours by the CID in a case involving alleged embezzlement of ₹13 crore linked to a cooperative bank and the Bhatpara Municipality. The case was filed by Somnath Shyam, adding fuel to the political tensions between Singh and the state government.

Political Crossroads and Allegations of Vendetta
Once a prominent figure in the TMC, Singh’s political journey has been anything but smooth. After being overlooked for a Lok Sabha ticket, Singh left the TMC in a public fallout, joining the BJP amid much fanfare. However, his return to the TMC after a brief stint with the BJP was marked by dramatic gestures—Mamata Banerjee’s posters replaced by Modi’s overnight in his offices. Despite his party switches, Singh failed to secure electoral victories, adding to his frustrations.

Now firmly back with the BJP, Singh has accused the TMC-led government of using state machinery for political vendetta. Speaking to the press after his questioning, he claimed, “This is an orchestrated move to harass and silence me. Mamata Banerjee is trying to kill me. My life is in danger.”

The CID has maintained that Singh’s interrogation is strictly related to allegations of financial irregularities during his leadership of the municipality and cooperative bank.

The Case: Allegations and Probe
The corruption case dates back to Singh’s time as chairman of Bhatpara Municipality. He stands accused of misappropriating ₹13 crore in municipal funds and cooperative bank operations. According to CID sources, the investigation involves detailed scrutiny of Singh’s financial dealings, and further questioning may be required. Singh, however, has dismissed these allegations as politically motivated, claiming that the CID’s summons are merely a tactic to “waste time and intimidate political opponents.”

A Brewing Political Storm
Arjun Singh’s accusations come at a sensitive time for West Bengal politics, where tensions between the BJP and TMC have frequently escalated into public spats and legal battles. Singh’s claims of a death threat add a new dimension to the already volatile political environment in the state.

While BJP leaders have rallied behind Singh, accusing the TMC of targeting opponents through state agencies, the TMC has dismissed his remarks as baseless and inflammatory. “These are nothing but attempts to deflect attention from serious corruption charges,” said a TMC spokesperson.

What’s Next?
With the CID intensifying its investigation and Singh doubling down on his explosive claims, the coming days are likely to see further political drama. Whether the allegations hold merit or serve as yet another chapter in West Bengal’s fierce political rivalry remains to be seen. However, the shadow of corruption and accusations of vendetta have only deepened the polarization in the state’s political landscape.

For now, Singh’s fiery claims and the ongoing probe have ensured that the political spotlight remains firmly fixed on him.

Historic Archana Post Office: A Fading Legacy of Rabindranath Tagore in Kolkata

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 28, 2024, Calcutta : Nestled in the heart of North Kolkata, under a fading red house near the Toron Dwar of Jorasanko Thakurbari, lies the Archana Sub Post Office, a silent witness to the cultural and literary legacy of Rabindranath Tagore. Unassuming at first glance, this historic post office harbors a rich history intertwined with the life and work of the world-renowned poet and Nobel laureate.

During his time at Jorasanko Thakurbari, Tagore frequently visited this post office to collect letters and copies of the Archana literary monthly magazine, which he named himself in 1904. The magazine, edited by Krishnadas Chandra and first published in 1320 Bengali year, served as a cultural forum for stories, novels, poems, and rhymes. Tagore’s contributions to the magazine elevated its significance, making it a beacon of Bengal’s literary renaissance.

Adding to its historical prestige, the Archana Post Office became the recipient of Tagore’s first Nobel Prize letter. Over the decades, it has stood as a symbol of the poet’s enduring connection to Kolkata’s cultural tapestry.

A Heritage at Risk
Today, the Archana Post Office is in dire straits. The building, once steeped in history, is now a crumbling relic. Plaster peels from the walls, the roof threatens to collapse, and the two staff members working within its premises are exposed to constant danger. Repeated complaints to postal department authorities have gone unanswered, leaving this heritage site neglected and vulnerable.

The situation is further complicated by legal disputes. The owner of the dilapidated house housing the post office has reportedly filed a case to remove it, expressing disinterest in preserving its heritage. Meanwhile, the state government has yet to intervene, and there is no visible plaque or marker to inform visitors of the post office’s illustrious past.

A Call to Preserve History
The Archana Post Office, named after a magazine that encapsulated Tagore’s cultural ideology, is more than just a post office. It is a repository of memories and a testament to Kolkata’s historical and literary grandeur. Without urgent cooperation from both the state and central governments, this invaluable piece of Tagore’s legacy risks being lost forever.

Efforts to restore and preserve the site could breathe life back into this historic landmark, transforming it into a vibrant cultural hub that honors Tagore’s memory. Kolkata’s heritage deserves no less, and so does the world that cherishes Rabindranath Tagore’s legacy.

Conclusion
The Archana Post Office stands at a crossroads between decay and preservation. It is not merely a crumbling structure but a treasure trove of cultural and historical significance. Its revival demands immediate attention and action—a fitting tribute to the poet who once graced its halls.

Tensions Rise Over Bangladesh’s Treatment of Minorities; BJP and TMC React to Arrest of Hindu Leader Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 27, 2024, Kolkata: The ongoing crisis in Bangladesh, particularly the escalating violence against minority Hindus, has sparked concern in India, with both political leaders and citizens closely watching the situation. Recently, Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu, a prominent figure from Bangladesh, was arrested, further intensifying fears of rising extremism and persecution of minorities in the neighboring country.

The arrest has drawn strong reactions from Indian political figures, especially the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP leaders have condemned the ongoing attacks on Hindus and other minority groups in Bangladesh, citing a recent surge in violence, including arson, looting, and vandalism targeting homes, businesses, and religious establishments. In a statement, the BJP expressed deep concern, particularly about the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu, a spokesperson for the Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote. The party emphasized that the situation poses a grave threat to religious freedom and human rights in Bangladesh.

“We have noted with deep concern the arrest and denial of bail of Shri Chinmoy Krishna Prabhu, and the continued attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. Extremists have been emboldened to carry out arson, looting, and violent acts against Hindus and other minority communities. This cannot be ignored,” the BJP said in a statement.

In response to the growing tensions, Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee also addressed the issue during a press interaction on Wednesday at the Parliament premises. When asked about the situation in Bangladesh, Banerjee acknowledged the gravity of the situation but refrained from commenting on internal matters of another country. “It is not our place to interfere in the affairs of another nation, but the incident is indeed unfortunate,” Banerjee stated, expressing concern over the violence and unrest.

However, a video clip of Abhishek Banerjee’s statement was posted on the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Trinamool Congress, where the party wrote, “Abhishek Banerjee expresses concern over the situation in Bangladesh.” The post was later deleted, raising questions about the party’s stance and the potential diplomatic implications.

The issue has also stirred up domestic politics, with the opposition BJP demanding stronger action from the Indian government. BJP leader Shuvendu Adhikari weighed in, suggesting that India may need to take more decisive steps if the situation in Bangladesh worsens, even hinting at the possibility of reopening the Petrapole border. “If necessary, we will reopen the Petrapole border to protect the interests of the people and ensure that the persecuted minorities have a safe passage,” Adhikari stated, reflecting the urgency of the situation in the eyes of the opposition.

As tensions rise, questions are being raised about the relationship between Bangladesh and India, with some speculating that the Bangladeshi government, led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, may be gravitating towards Pakistan. This speculation comes amid growing concerns that the government in Dhaka may be increasingly hostile to India, even as the violence against Hindus and other religious minorities escalates in Bangladesh.

The Indian government, for its part, has reiterated its deep concern about the ongoing violence and the arrest of Prabhu, while continuing to monitor the situation closely. “The violence against minorities in Bangladesh is deeply troubling, and we continue to call for respect for religious freedom and human rights,” a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs read.

As the situation in Bangladesh continues to evolve, both countries face critical challenges in maintaining diplomatic relations and addressing the humanitarian crisis unfolding at their borders. The international community is watching closely as both India and Bangladesh navigate this delicate and increasingly volatile situation.

BJP MLAs Disrupt West Bengal Assembly Over Women’s Safety, Protest Against Speaker’s Action

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 27, 2024, Kolkata: The West Bengal Assembly was thrown into chaos this morning following a protest by BJP MLAs over the rising violence against women and children in the state. The protest was sparked by an incident involving the suspension of BJP MLA Tapsi Mandal’s microphone during a discussion on an adjournment motion addressing the issue.

BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh, leading the protest, criticized the Mamata Banerjee government for its failure to address the growing violence against women, citing the recent RG Kar incident as an example. “Even after the RG Kar tragedy, violence against women and children continues unabated in Bengal. Physical assault and even murders are on the rise,” Ghosh said, urging immediate action from the state government.

In the Assembly, women BJP MLAs, including Tapsi Mandal, Shikha Chatterjee, Malti Rava, and Chandana Bauri, submitted an adjournment motion demanding urgent discussion on the issue. The motion was allowed to proceed, with the women MLAs permitted to read an edited version of their commentary. However, when Mandal began reading the commentary, her microphone was abruptly switched off, sparking an uproar in the House.

Shankar Ghosh condemned the Speaker’s actions, accusing the Speaker, Biman Banerjee, of silencing the voices of women and children across Bengal. “The Chief Minister had said upon taking office that the opposition’s voices would be silenced. Today, the Speaker did exactly that. Tapsi Mandal’s microphone was not just turned off – it was the microphone of countless women and children of Bengal that was silenced,” Ghosh stated, further criticizing the ruling government for suppressing important discussions on women’s safety.

The incident quickly escalated, with BJP members walking out of the Assembly in protest against what they called undemocratic behavior. According to Assembly sources, Speaker Biman Banerjee defended the action, stating that the edited version of the commentary was to be read as per the rules, and since Mandal was reading from the unapproved portion, the microphone was switched off to ensure adherence to protocol.

The BJP’s protest highlights the ongoing concerns over women’s safety in the state, which have become a significant point of contention between the opposition and the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress government. BJP leaders have been vocal in their criticism of the state’s handling of women’s issues, particularly after several high-profile cases of violence, including the RG Kar incident.

While the disruption in the Assembly has drawn attention to the issue, it also underscores the growing tension between the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP, particularly on matters of governance and accountability.

Mayor Firhad Hakim Inspects ‘Beautification of Mother’s Ghat’ Project, Announces Plans for Slum Dwellers in Phase Two

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 27, 2024,

Kolkata : Mayor Firhad Hakim visited the ongoing “Beautification of Mother’s Ghat” project, an initiative spearheaded by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Tuesday to inspect progress and discuss upcoming plans. The visit was attended by local councilor Bapi Ghosh, Mayor’s Council member for the Slum Department Swapan Samaddar, and several other officials, underscoring the importance of the project to the city’s urban renewal efforts.

The mayor highlighted the deep cultural and religious significance of the Ghat, saying, “The Chief Minister is deeply fond of this project. The importance of Mother’s Ghat, both in terms of religious beliefs and historical perspective, is immense. This beautification work is being carried out with great care and attention to detail, and we are confident that it will attract international tourists.”

The project, which is being executed in phases, aims to transform the area around Mother’s Ghat into a prime cultural and tourist destination. While the first phase has already been completed, the second phase has now begun with a special focus on improving the living conditions of slum dwellers in the vicinity.

In this next phase, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has outlined plans to provide new housing for approximately 300 families living around Sarada Mayer’s house in Bagbazar. Under the state government’s Banglar Bari project, new flats will be built to house these families. A total of 11 residential towers will be constructed, with four flats per floor, each spanning 400 square feet. These flats will be ready for occupancy before the Puja season of 2025.

Additionally, the area surrounding Sarada Mayer’s house, which leads up to Mother’s Ghat, will undergo beautification, with new trees planted and lighting installations added to enhance the environment. The road infrastructure will also be upgraded, contributing to a more scenic and accessible waterfront area.

The state government has allocated a total of ₹20 crore for the second phase of the project, emphasizing the government’s commitment to improving both the aesthetic appeal and the quality of life for local residents.

Mayor Hakim reiterated the importance of this project, not only as a cultural landmark but also as a model for urban renewal that combines heritage preservation with modern development. “This is a step towards making Kolkata more beautiful and accessible for everyone, while ensuring that the marginalized sections of society are uplifted,” he said.

The Beautification of Mother’s Ghat project is part of a broader initiative by the West Bengal government to revitalize key historical and cultural sites in the city while providing better housing and infrastructure for the urban poor.

Chandannagar Takes Action Against Traffic Chaos Caused by Totos, Launches E-Rickshaw Counting Initiative

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 26, 2024, Hooghly: Totos, the three-wheeled e-rickshaws that have become increasingly common in Chandannagar, Hooghly, are causing significant traffic congestion and public inconvenience in the city. These vehicles, which operate without proper regulation, have become a source of frustration for residents, particularly during peak hours, including school runs. Complaints about traffic jams and disorderly traffic management have been escalating, but the municipality has had no clear idea of how many Totos are operating in the city. In response, Chandannagar Municipality has launched a major initiative to address the growing concern.

Chandannagar Municipal Corporation Mayor, Ram Chakraborty, acknowledged the challenges posed by the unregulated e-rickshaws. He stated, “Totos have become a serious concern in our city. The general public faces numerous difficulties, ranging from movement restrictions to traffic congestion. We also do not have any official data about how many Totos are currently operating in the city. The absence of government regulations on Totos has made it even more difficult to manage.”

To tackle the issue, Mayor Chakraborty mentioned that the municipality has taken proactive steps, collaborating with the state’s transport minister to establish clear rules and regulations for Toto operations. The process of identifying and officially registering Totos has now begun, and it is expected that these vehicles will be allowed to ply within the city only under strict guidelines. “We are setting an example for the state,” he said. “While Arambagh has already successfully completed similar efforts, Chandannagar is now taking the lead in implementing a formal process.”

The first phase of this initiative, a comprehensive counting and registration drive for e-rickshaws and Totos, started on Tuesday, November 26. The process is scheduled to continue until November 30. The municipality has set up counting camps at four designated locations throughout the city to gather data on the number of Totos in operation. On the first day of the drive, dozens of Toto drivers gathered in crowds to fill out application forms for registration.

According to Mayor Chakraborty, this drive is being conducted under the guidance of the state government’s transport department, with representatives from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) present at each camp to oversee the process. “We are working in close coordination with the RTO and municipal staff to ensure that all Totos are accounted for and that the necessary rules are implemented effectively,” he added.

This initiative is part of a larger effort by the Chandannagar Municipality to restore order to the city’s roads and ensure a smoother, safer transportation system for its residents. By regulating the e-rickshaw sector, the local authorities hope to alleviate traffic congestion, particularly in residential and school zones, and create a more organized system of transportation.

With the successful implementation of the Toto registration process, the municipality aims to address the ongoing traffic challenges and bring much-needed relief to the citizens of Chandannagar.

Naihati Ferry Ghat to be Renamed in Honor of ‘The Great Mother’ as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Announces New Initiatives

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 26, 2024, Naihati : In a significant move to honor the spirit of motherly love and service, the Naihati ferry ghat will soon be renamed after “The Great Mother,” a title that symbolizes strength and nurturing. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made this announcement on Tuesday, during a visit to Naihati, while also unveiling plans to enhance the ghat with decorations worth Rs 10 lakh, funded through the MP’s quota. The beautification project will include high-mast lighting, further improving the area’s appeal and safety.

The announcement came after the Chief Minister participated in a religious ceremony at the Naihati temple, where she performed puja with sarees and flowers, offering her respects to the revered figure of “The Great Mother.” During the ceremony, Mamata Banerjee rang the temple bell, marking a moment of deep devotion. An unexpected moment occurred when the priest, holding the puja thali, inquired about the Chief Minister’s caste. In response, Mamata Banerjee simply and powerfully stated, “My tribe is Mother-Soil-People. This is not just a sentiment here; I worship this tribe wherever I go.”

Emphasizing her commitment to the welfare of the people, the Chief Minister also addressed the residents’ security concerns, announcing that a new police outpost will soon be established in Naihati. She further expanded her plans for the region by launching outpatient department (OPD) services in both Naihati and Bhatpara hospitals, aimed at improving access to medical care for the local population. Mamata Banerjee revealed that she had allocated Rs 2 crore each from her MP Lad funds for the two hospitals, totaling Rs 4 crore to enhance healthcare services.

Reflecting on the region’s history, Mamata Banerjee recalled the unrest that gripped Naihati five years ago, a time of fear and uncertainty for the people. “Five years ago, there was a commotion. People were tortured, and no one would leave their homes out of fear,” she recalled. “At that time, I painted the party offices for two hours—not to paint, but to give courage to the people. I came to Naihati twice during that period to restore peace, despite all the criticism I faced.” She added, “I don’t care about gossip. The work of the people continues, and that’s why I came here today to wish for the well-being of the people of the state.”

With these announcements, Mamata Banerjee reaffirmed her dedication to the development of Naihati and its people, promising ongoing support for their security, healthcare, and prosperity.

Shantanu Banerjee, Hooghly District Council TMC President, Granted Bail in Education Recruitment Corruption Case

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 26, 2024, Hooghly : Shantanu Banerjee, the President of the Hooghly District Council’s Trinamool Congress (TMC) unit, has been granted bail by the Calcutta High Court in connection with the ongoing education recruitment corruption case.

Banerjee, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in March 2023, received the bail on Tuesday, following the approval of Justice Shuvra Ghosh. His release, however, is not immediate, as he still faces other serious charges and legal proceedings.

Banerjee, who is accused of allegedly extorting crores of rupees from job seekers through fraudulent recruitment processes, was granted bail on a personal bond of Rs 10 lakh. The case involves claims of large-scale corruption linked to recruitment for government jobs in the state’s education sector. Banerjee, who also serves as the executive officer of the Hooghly District Council, is also accused of illegal sand mining activities along the river, further complicating his legal troubles.

Despite the bail in the ED case, Banerjee will remain in custody for the time being. This is because he has not been granted bail in the separate CBI case, which is also investigating the primary recruitment corruption matter. Sources suggest that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) may seek his custodial interrogation in connection with the recruitment scam, further delaying his release.

Banerjee was initially arrested by the ED on March 10, 2023, after several rounds of questioning. His residence and bungalow were raided by law enforcement in January of the same year, as part of the investigation into the corruption case.

While Banerjee’s legal battles continue, his bail has raised questions about the broader implications for the TMC leadership in Hooghly, especially as the investigation into recruitment-related corruption gains momentum. The case is likely to unfold further, with more developments expected in the coming weeks.

Babul Supriyo Highlights Kolkata’s Rapid Growth in IT Sector, Hails Mamata Banerjee’s Leadership and Policy Support

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, November 26, 2024, Kolkata: In a recent discussion, Information Technology Minister Babul Supriyo praised the remarkable growth of Kolkata’s IT sector under the leadership of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He emphasized that the IT industry in the city has seen an impressive 70% annual growth, significantly contributing to the state’s economy and creating a wealth of new employment opportunities.

Supriyo attributed this rapid expansion to Banerjee’s focused efforts to position Kolkata as a major hub for technology and innovation. He pointed out that the introduction of both front office and back office systems has resulted in a surge in job creation, particularly in the back office sector, further boosting employment in the city. According to the minister, this burgeoning industry is poised to attract significant foreign investment, marking a new phase of growth for the region.

“The Chief Minister is committed to making Kolkata a leading player in the national IT landscape,” Supriyo stated. “Her initiatives have laid the foundation for a thriving IT ecosystem, and the state is poised to become a magnet for both domestic and international investors.”

Supriyo also highlighted three key state policies designed to accelerate the growth of the IT sector: the Drone Policy, the Semi-conductor Policy, and the Global Capability Center. These policies, he explained, are expected to significantly enhance the state’s appeal to global investors, making Kolkata a key destination for cutting-edge technology companies.

Further underscoring the region’s potential, Supriyo mentioned that Webull, a major player in the IT industry, is developing a sprawling Silicon Valley-like campus spanning approximately 200 acres in New Town, Kolkata. The development will host major global companies, including Infosys and Reliance, which are already set to establish a presence in the area.

Additionally, Supriyo revealed that discussions are ongoing with British Telecom, the world’s third-largest telecommunications company, and that a recent delegation of 17 British representatives visited Kolkata to explore opportunities for collaboration. These talks signal a promising future for Kolkata as a key player in the global IT landscape.

In conclusion, Supriyo expressed confidence that with continued investment and policy support, Kolkata will soon emerge as India’s foremost city in the information technology sector. “In the near future, Kolkata will not only lead in India but also become a global hub for IT,” he said.

The state’s concerted efforts, combined with its growing infrastructure and favorable policies, are positioning Kolkata to become a powerhouse in the IT industry, attracting both national and international players.
