Tensions Erupt in Bengal Assembly Over Flag Incident, Shuvendu Adhikari Leads Heated Confrontation

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, April  7,  2025, Kolkata : A heated confrontation unfolded within the premises of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly after a BJP MLA’s personal assistant was prevented from entering with a motorcycle bearing a flag inscribed with the slogan “Jai Shri Ram.” The incident sparked outrage among BJP leaders, particularly Opposition Leader Shuvendu Adhikari, who led a charged demonstration in the Assembly complex.

According to reports, the situation escalated when the personal assistant of BJP MLA Shankar Ghosh was halted at the Assembly gate by security personnel, who insisted that the “Jai Shri Ram” flag be removed from his motorcycle before entry. The security staff cited the reason that it was still the day of Dashami, and Ram Navami had already passed. Enraged by the incident, Shuvendu Adhikari and several BJP MLAs gathered, chanting “Jai Shri Ram” as they entered the Assembly in search of the person responsible for the action.

Adhikari, visibly upset, confronted journalists, claiming that the act of blocking entry based on the flag was an affront to the BJP and to Hindu sentiments. He declared, “I will not tolerate or accept insults to Jai Shri Ram,” adding that such behavior was unacceptable in India, which he insisted was not a place like Pakistan. Holding up the flag in question, he criticized the state government under Mamata Banerjee’s leadership, accusing it of catering to what he termed the “Muslim League” government. The tension intensified as Adhikari stated, “We are Hindu children, and we will not be silenced.”

The situation grew even more volatile when Shankar Ghosh arrived at the scene and, upon hearing the details of the incident, expressed his fury, telling security personnel, “I will definitely throw them out.” Meanwhile, BJP MLAs gathered outside the Assembly chanting slogans, further escalating the confrontation.

Though Adhikari mentioned learning the name of the accused worker, he chose not to make it public. The incident sparked significant excitement and controversy within the Assembly, drawing attention to the growing tensions in the political landscape of West Bengal. The situation remains unresolved, with both parties exchanging sharp words over the incident and its implications for communal and political relations in the state.
