Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh Inaugurates Permanent Campus of Indian Institute of Handloom Technology in Phulia

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, Kolkata, January 4, 2025 :  Union Textile Minister Giriraj Singh inaugurated the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT) in Fulia, North 24 Parganas, on Saturday, highlighting the government’s commitment to advancing the handloom sector. Speaking at the event, Singh expressed confidence that the newly established institute would evolve into a leading center of learning and innovation in the future.


The Indian Institute of Handloom Technology is part of a nationwide initiative by the Government of India to address the growing need for skilled technical manpower in the handloom industry. Six such institutes have been set up across the country, all operating under the Ministry of Textiles and the administrative control of the Development Commissioner. These institutions aim to protect and promote India’s rich handloom heritage while preparing students with the technical expertise needed to meet the demands of the modern textile industry.

Handloom is one of India’s largest and most important cottage industries, providing employment to millions, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. The new IIHT campus in Phulia, constructed with an investment of Rs 75.95 crore, is equipped with modern amenities, including computer labs, smart classrooms, and a digital library. Separate hostel facilities for boys and girls have been set up to ensure the safety and well-being of students, fostering a conducive learning environment.

The event was attended by several prominent dignitaries, including Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, Hon’ble Union Minister of State for Ministry of Education and Development of North East Region, Shri Suvendu Adhikari, MLA and Hon’ble Leader of Opposition in West Bengal, Shri Jagannath Sarkar, Hon’ble Member of Parliament for Ranaghat constituency, Shri Parthasarathi Chatterjee, Hon’ble MLA for Ranaghat North West, Shri Bankim Chandra Ghosh, Hon’ble MLA for Chakdaha, Shri Ashim Biswas, Hon’ble MLA for Ranaghat North East, Shri Ashis Kumar Biswas, Hon’ble MLA for Krishnaganj, and Dr. M. Beena, IAS, Development Commissioner for Handlooms, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

The new campus, constructed at an investment of Rs 75.95 crore, is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including computer labs, smart classrooms, and a digital library. To enhance the safety and convenience of students, separate hostel facilities have been provided for boys and girls, ensuring a secure and conducive environment for learning.

On this occasion, Union Minister Giriraj Singh, along with other dignitaries, participated in a tree-planting ceremony under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” initiative, underscoring the importance of environmental conservation alongside educational development. Additionally, a unified website for all six IIHT centers was launched to streamline communication and resource sharing across the institutes.

This new campus is expected to serve students from West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Sikkim, contributing significantly to the educational landscape of the region while further bolstering the growth of the handloom sector in India.
