Dual Events in Kolkata: Durga Puja Carnival and Doctors’ Protest Coincide Amid Tensions

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 15, 2024, Kolkata: In an unusual intersection of celebration and protest, Kolkata saw a mix of festive spirit and social activism today.

The state government’s much-anticipated Durga Puja Carnival, a grand event celebrating Bengal’s UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage, took place on Red Road, showcasing the city’s renowned Durga Pujas with both local and international guests in attendance.

However, the festivities were overshadowed by a parallel protest organized by the Joint Platform of Doctors, termed the “Droh Carnival,” in response to the recent RG Kar Hospital rape-murder case.

As junior doctors remain on hunger strike, protesting the government’s handling of the case, the situation in Kolkata has become tense. The Droh Carnival, aimed at drawing attention to these grievances, took place along the same route as the Puja Carnival. Despite appeals from the state government to cancel the protest, the doctors persisted, even inviting officials to witness their demonstration.

To manage the rising tensions and prevent unrest, Police Commissioner Manoj Verma imposed Section 163 of the Indian Penal Code, banning gatherings in seven key areas around Dharmatala. Authorities are on high alert, closely monitoring the situation as the city juggles both celebration and protest on this significant day.
