Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 15, 2024, New Delhi: In a significant step towards bolstering its defense capabilities, India has finalized the purchase of 31 advanced MQ-9 Reaper drones from the United States. This long-discussed deal, valued at approximately $350 million (₹30,000 crore), was formally completed on Tuesday, though the delivery date for these highly sophisticated drones is yet to be announced.
The agreement marks a historic moment in India’s defense strategy. Out of the 31 drones, 15 will be allocated to the Indian Navy for maritime surveillance, while the remaining 16 will be split between the Indian Air Force and the Army. The Navy is set to receive the Sea Guardian variant of the MQ-9 drones, while the Air Force and Army will operate the Sky Guardian variant. Both versions offer unparalleled reconnaissance and strike capabilities.
These MQ-9 Reaper drones, also known as “hunter-killer” drones, boast advanced features that will significantly enhance India’s defense posture. Capable of flying for up to 27 hours at altitudes exceeding 50,000 feet, these drones can carry a payload of up to 2,155 kilograms, making them formidable assets for both surveillance and combat missions. This makes them a key tool for monitoring border regions and countering potential threats from neighboring countries like China and Pakistan.
India’s interest in acquiring these drones was primarily driven by growing security concerns along its northern and western borders. In June 2023, during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington, the groundwork for this deal was laid. After months of negotiations, the US officially greenlit the sale, marking a new chapter in India-US defense cooperation.
The inclusion of these drones is expected to significantly strengthen India’s defense capabilities, providing the military with state-of-the-art tools for intelligence gathering, surveillance, and precision strikes. With rising tensions in the region, particularly with China’s increasing military presence in the Indian Ocean and ongoing border disputes with Pakistan, the arrival of these drones will undoubtedly provide a strategic advantage to India.
While the exact timeline for the delivery of these drones remains unclear, defense experts believe that their integration into India’s military operations will bring a new level of sophistication to its defense infrastructure. The MQ-9B Reaper drones’ ability to operate in harsh environments and provide long-range surveillance will be crucial for safeguarding India’s borders and enhancing its overall national security.
This acquisition is part of a broader effort by the Indian government to modernize its military and prepare for future conflicts in an increasingly volatile geopolitical landscape.
