Jadavpur University Faces Student Protests Amid New Rules to Address ‘Barging’ Concerns

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 21, 2025, Kolkata :  The issue of ‘bagging,’ or unauthorized entry into university hostels, has become a growing concern across India, and Jadavpur University (JU) is currently at the forefront of this issue. In response to rising incidents of barging and subsequent student deaths in recent years, the university’s administration has initiated strict measures to regulate access to campus facilities, triggering protests from the student body.

The changes, introduced under the leadership of the new Vice-Chancellor, who took office last year after a period of campus unrest, have sparked backlash, particularly from first-year students. The main grievance centers on the new restrictions, which include the locking of hostel doors after 11 pm, making it impossible for students to move freely between hostels during the night. Protests have erupted, with students voicing concerns that these measures are unnecessarily curbing their freedom and movement on campus.

Jadavpur University, known for its traditionally open-minded atmosphere, has seen a shift in its approach to campus security, driven by increasing incidents of violent ‘bagging’ incidents. This practice has caused panic among students, particularly after several tragic fatalities linked to such acts in recent years. The university’s response aims to address these safety concerns by implementing stricter rules, including the aforementioned hostel access restrictions.

While the university’s administration defends these changes as necessary to safeguard the well-being of students, many are critical of what they perceive as an overreach that undermines the institution’s progressive reputation. The students, in turn, have raised their voices in protest, arguing that the measures go too far in restricting their autonomy, especially in a university known for its culture of freedom.

As tensions rise on campus, the debate continues over the balance between safety and the preservation of the university’s long-standing culture of openness. The outcome of this clash remains uncertain as both sides stand firm in their positions.
