Renovation of Language Memorial Pillar Underway in Serampore for International Mother Language Day Celebration

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, February 21, 2025, Serampore :  In anticipation of International Mother Language Day, the Bhashabagan in Serampore is undergoing significant renovation to meet the demands of the local community. Municipal Councilor Santosh Singh confirmed that the broken portion of the Language Memorial Pillar has been restored and repainted. Additionally, tiles have been laid in the surrounding garden, and CCTV cameras are being installed to enhance security for future events.

The Bhashabagan, located on the Ganga side of Raighat, has been a cultural hub since 2018, when the municipal authorities, under the guidance of the organization ‘A Mori Bangla Bhasha,’ erected the Language Memorial Pillar. A garden was also developed in front of the memorial, and the site has since hosted various events, including celebrations for International Mother Language Day.

Today, the area has been filled with the presence of educated and literature-loving locals, who have gathered in large numbers for the day’s festivities. The memorial pillar, topped with two hands holding the letter ‘A’, had suffered damage to one of the hands. Last year, the broken portion was temporarily patched up with thermocouple during the Language Day ceremony. This prompted the organization to formally request the municipality to address the issue. Secretary of ‘A Mori Bangla Bhasha,’ Sameer Saha, expressed satisfaction with the renovations, stating, “We are happy that the municipality has kept its promise.”

The renovation process has garnered praise from local residents, including Soumitra Dev, a young man who had posted on social media about the deteriorating condition of the memorial pillar. He shared his approval of the work being done, saying, “The renovation is going well, and I hope it will be properly maintained in the future.”

The ongoing restoration reflects the strong community commitment to preserving the significance of International Mother Language Day, fostering both cultural pride and respect for linguistic heritage.
