: A crucial meeting between junior doctors and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was held at the Nabanna Assembly Hall on Thursday afternoon but ended in a stalemate after one and a half hours. The meeting was marked by a disagreement over the doctors’ demand for live streaming, which the state government refused to accept.

The agitating junior doctors made it clear that they would not participate in any discussion unless the meeting was live-streamed. They argued that live streaming would ensure transparency and accountability in the discussions with the Chief Minister and state officials. Despite waiting for a long time, the junior doctors did not budge from their position.

On the other hand, the state government remained firm in its stance against live streaming. State Police Director General Rajeev Kumar, responding to reporters’ questions, stated that the matter was still pending in certain aspects, and therefore, live streaming was not possible. This refusal has led to a deadlock, with neither side willing to compromise.

The ongoing agitation, which includes a hunger strike and work stoppages by the junior doctors, has severely impacted healthcare services in the state. Patients, especially those from rural areas, are suffering due to the unavailability of doctors. With doctors on strike, many government hospitals in rural areas are left without adequate medical staff for half the day, leading to a significant disruption in healthcare delivery.

Patients and their families, especially those from poor and middle-class backgrounds, have expressed frustration over the situation. Many are being forced to travel from remote villages to city hospitals to receive basic medical care, only to find that services are disrupted. The emergency departments in several hospitals are also affected, with reports of doctors leaving before the end of their shifts, citing excuses related to lunch or rest time.

The general public has expressed their discontent with both the junior doctors and the state government. While the doctors’ agitation is centered around legitimate demands for better working conditions and security, the public is questioning the disruption of essential services. There is also criticism of the state government for its inability to resolve the situation and ensure uninterrupted healthcare services.

The issue has sparked a broader debate on the state of healthcare in rural West Bengal. Many rural government hospitals are struggling due to a lack of adequate doctors and resources, leading to poor healthcare services for the residents of those areas. The agitation by junior doctors has further highlighted these systemic issues, drawing attention to the gaps in healthcare delivery across the state.

As the standoff continues, the deadlock between the junior doctors and the state government remains unresolved. The insistence on live streaming the meeting has become a point of contention, with both sides holding firm on their positions. Meanwhile, the general public continues to bear the brunt of the impasse, with healthcare services across West Bengal severely affected.
