Tragic Fire in Lokhandwala Claims Three Lives: Rescue Efforts Fall Short as Flames Engulf High-Rise Apartment

Baby Chakraborty, KalimNews, October 16, 2024, Mumbai: A devastating fire that broke out in a high-rise apartment in Mumbai’s Lokhandwala area claimed the lives of three residents early on Wednesday morning. The incident occurred in a 14th-floor apartment on Four Cross Road, where flames originating from the 10th floor spread rapidly, trapping occupants in the upper levels of the building.

According to eyewitness accounts, the fire started around 8 a.m., sending plumes of smoke through the residential building. Despite the swift arrival of the fire brigade, the blaze quickly engulfed several floors, leaving residents in a desperate situation. Rescuers battled for over an hour to bring the fire under control and to save those trapped inside.

Police sources reported that the three victims were unable to escape their apartment as the fire spread. They were identified as Chandra Prakash Soni (74), Kanta Soni (74), and their domestic help, Pelubeta (42). All three were found unconscious and were rushed to Cooper Hospital, where they were declared dead upon arrival.

Local authorities praised the fire brigade’s quick response, as they managed to prevent the fire from spreading further and safely evacuated the remaining residents of the building. However, the cause of the fire remains unclear, and officials are conducting a detailed investigation to determine what led to the deadly outbreak.

The fire has left the Lokhandwala community in shock, with many residents expressing concerns about safety measures in high-rise buildings. Several families have been temporarily displaced as fire officials assess the structural integrity of the building following the blaze. An atmosphere of panic gripped the area as many recalled the terrifying moments when thick black smoke and flames consumed parts of the tower.

“The fire spread so quickly, we barely had time to react,” said one resident who managed to escape in time. “It was chaotic, and we could see smoke billowing out of the windows. People were shouting for help.”

While firefighters were able to contain the blaze within an hour, the damage caused to the upper floors was extensive. The rescue teams are also working to ensure that there are no remaining hazards within the building before residents are allowed to return to their homes.

The police have cordoned off the area as they carry out their investigation into the tragic incident. Early reports suggest that a possible electrical short circuit could be one of the reasons for the fire, though no official confirmation has been made. Authorities are also reviewing the building’s fire safety protocols to ensure that necessary precautions are in place to prevent such incidents in the future.

This latest fire incident serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by residents of high-rise buildings in urban areas, sparking fresh debates about fire safety regulations and the need for improved response measures.
